Good day of eating - Veggie Galaxy and Little Q Hotpot

Banner day yesterday!

Lunch at Veggie Galaxy with two friends/co-workers. Place was hopping at 1:30 pm so we sat at the counter. I loved my tofu omelet (no eggs for me, please!) filled with soy chorizo (with yummy, crispy edges) and arugula. Side of home fries (just ok - I wish the dices were bigger...the French fries looked MUCH more delicious) and sourdough toast. CBC Pumpkin on draft. One friend had the reuben on rye (from the menu: house-smoked smoked tofu, sweet and sour pickled cabbage, swiss cheese, and "dijonaise") that she loved and another had the Kendall Sq burger (menu description: roasted red pepper puree, roasted garlic mayo, arugula) - it, too, looked good. Topped with two huge onion rings - she didn't offer any to us, so they must have been good! They offer a tomatillo hot sauce (I forgot to ask if they make it in-house) that really pepped up the flavor of the burger and omelet.

Vegetarian feast at Little Q Hotpot in Arlington with friends. The four of us got the mala and Chinese miso. Miso was bland and was greatly helped with the addition of the peanut sauce (or mixing in some of the mala). We got assorted mushroom and veggie platters, Chinese broccoli, watercress, lotus root, taro (I can do without the latter two - I always find them uninteresting), Shandong and udon noodles.

This made up for the just-ok veggie burger at Atwood's the night before. Crumbly, as most veggie tend to be, but I can overlook that if the flavor is right. It could definitely have used some spice. Still, one of my favorite places in town.

  1. Thanks for the review. We've eaten at Veggie Galaxy twice now and also really enjoyed it. We had some house made ketchup both times that was really terrific. Tasted like it had some sweet Hungarian paprika in it. I had the Reuben one time and something called "The Melt" the other time, which I actually preferred. Everything is local and all of the desserts are vegan. The desserts are really outstanding, even if you are not a vegan. We found the staff to be really friendly and helpful, the service quick and we were impressed with the cleanliness of the place. It sparkled. Very nice addition for vegetarians, vegans and anyone who likes good food. We'll be back.

I completely forgot to mention the service at Veggie Galaxy (and Little Q for that matter). VG staff was totally on top of everything. Great, earnest service - no lapses AT ALL. Same at Little Q, which was very busy when we walked in around 8 pm. By 9:30 pm, though, it was really quiet in there. That's Arlington for you, I guess (I know - I live there!).

    2. That's too bad about the Atwood's veggie burger. At one time, it was a great version, but I feel like they have had several menu revamps since that burger was being offered.

      1. Do you know which burger it was at Veggie Galaxy (black bean or mushroom chickpea)? I have tired and enjoyed both, but prefer the mushroom chickpea version. The onion rings are freshly made and excellent. They do make that sauce at VG and also offer bottles of Sriracha. They also had a good bbq sauce they had whipped up one day.

        1. Didn't know Veggie Galaxy had beer. Vegetarian food, CBC beer, good location. If only they were open 24 hours it would sound like my dream restaurant.
