Walking in at Grammercy

We're on a last-minute hunt for a restaurant tonight, and are considering trying to walk in to the tavern side of Grammercy. It would be a pre-theater dinner at around 5.30. Anybody know if we stand a chance? Has anybody had any luck with this in the past?

One plan is to have a reservation somewhere in the neighborhood as a backup, and call and cancel if we get in to Grammercy. If we do that, what are some good options for plan b, where we could still get a table for tonight?

Thanks!

    Finding seats in the front at Gramercy is fairly easy at any time of day;
    appearing at 5:30 on a Saturday afternoon should be a sure thing.

    EDIT: That neighbourhood is rife with superb places -indeed, that very block is pretty good; the real issue is finding something/anything at 5:30pm, and you can be sure the entirety of the Flatiron universe will be open to you at that hour.
