Tavern at the End of the World UPDATE?
Website is being updated, so I can't see the menu, and all of the CH threads that mention it are a year or so old. Thinking of going tonight, either there or Highland Kitchen. We've been to HK and love it, but we'd up for trying something new. Any other suggestions are welcome.

We just had dinner at the Tavern on Thursday night. They have hired someone to get their website up and running. The temporary marker will be there until that work is done.
The menu has been reprinted, but most of the prices remain the same. It is an easier menu to navigate but the lights were so low, it was really hard to read! I pulled up my candle and deciphered as best as I could.
The hamburger, which my dinner companion ate, did not have a brioche bun. It is a bun that isn't too soft, isn't too hard... just a good bun that doesn't take any attention away from the burger. I spotted a new soup... Smoky Seafood Chowder. This is what I know as Cullen Skink- smoked haddock in a lovely fish broth with potatoes and cream. For me, it was a main course soup since it was sold in a rather large bowl with some toast on the side. This soup alone will bring me back more often.
So the Tavern stays in the rotation.

re: smtucker
sm, yours seems to be a post in earnest (and all that info very helpful) but i have to say, being unfamiliar with this attribution, "Cullen Skink" sounds like the worst marketing name i ever heard..... right up there with Altoids, and that place in Watertown called The Brew and Chew. what is it- a person? a company? a culinary skunk? soup sounds delicious though.

It is a Scottish thing.... I didn't make it up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cullen_S...

The Tavern at the End of the World has many problems with the internets. Let's say that technology isn't their strong suit. However, they get food! The only thing I have ordered there that I didn't care for was the onion rings. Too much breading, not enough onion, but my fellow diners loved them.
This is a spot that lacks pretension. The food is good. The bartending is solid. The space is a bit loud and rambunctious. Of all my local spots, the Tavern is a good value. Solid food at reasonable prices served by people who smile.

Thanks to all! We wound up at HK, it was jammed. Then tried Posto, and then Foundary which were also jammed (I thought we'd beat the crowds by being early, but Noooooo.). We finally ate at Martsa, which was fine, but not what I was thinking of. Maybe next week! Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like my kind of place! BTW--the website says they have "free parking." If this is so, it solves the only drawback for going to Charlestown!

I reviewed this place a while back in The Phoenix. Love the jukebox (classic punk rock, soul, garage, British Invasion), the beer selection (15 on tap, leaning Belgian, 30 bottles), the toasties (big pressed sandwiches on Iggy's bread), the Irish-pub food (fish and chips, shepherd's pie), the burger (good roll and hand-cut fries), and the things you might expect the Nepalese chefs to do well (kebabs, curry anything). It also has a back room with a giant TV, a good spot to watch the game, and entertainment on many nights: live music, DJs, an open-mike comedy night on Wednesdays. Bleak neighborhood, great little place.

re: phatchris
I haven't had the burger at TATEOTW in a couple of years, but as I recall then, it was a good roll, maybe an Iggy's roll (I know they were using Iggy's bread on the toasties), but not the ubiquitous brioche roll, which I've long squawked about elsewhere.
There is a burger I had recently with a brioche roll that was actually good, at Catalyst, but they cut the roll down to almost nothing -- the perimeter was trimmed to the exact width of the patty, and the two halves put together were thinner than the patty (see photos) -- so it worked for me.

re: phatchris
Yes, the roll I had was definitely not that Iggy's black pepper brioche -- which, to be fair to it, is less offensively sweet than some -- used all over town (at Coda, its sibling Canary Square, and at Harvest, among others). Grrr.
(Edited to add: looks like another Hound below had the burger recently and did not get that Iggy's brioche roll either.)

Love both Highland Kitchen and the Tavern, the latter definitely being grittier, divier, more bar with great food than gastropub. I've been told by those in the know that you can't go wrong at the Tavern, and so far they're right. So far I've had the steak tips, the chipotle burger, the spinach salad with grilled chicken, and the onion rings and they've all been well worth ordering again. I've seen the curry, the beef stew, and the shepherd's pie and they've all made me want to order them myself.

re: BJK
No fish and chips? They have outstanding fish and chips, with a nice curry sauce courtesy of the Nepalese chefs.
Also, just to orient the OP, Tavern at the End of the World isn't too gritty, though the exterior is decidedly unpretentious. Nice furnishings, a very shiny new wood floor, as I recall, and a warm, homey vibe. It's not the kind of place where everyone stares you down as you walk in the door, they have a nice craft beer selection, and the staff is very friendly. But you still feel like you might in fact be in a tavern at the end of the world.
