Three Left-Handed Half-Italians Went To Krazy Fish (Charlotte)...

I wish I had a great punch line but…

Lunch was OK. I loved the vibe and the look of Krazy Fish. It’s my kind of dive. But my food was a little lacking.

I had a roti filled with the Cuban chicken and sauced with Jamaican yellow curry. I was trying to get it as close as possible to the rotis I’ve had in Trinidad and Tobago. The portion was huge, a large flour tortilla filled with rice and peas, the chicken and the curry sauce. The chicken was flavorful and moist but there was entirely too much rice and entirely too little sauce. The dish came with a small salad and a choice of side; I chose the sofrito beans, which again were decent but nothing special.

There were a lot of interesting things on the menu so maybe further exploration is needed. I’ll wait for the rest of my posse to chime in about their meals.

  1. I've been there numerous times. It's one of my favorite places for a cheap, somewhat unconventional dinner. The tacos are quite good. I really like the pork tacos with a blueberry chutney. They'll usually have a fish taco on special that's quite good (often mahi mahi). One time they had a kafta taco special that was out of this world.

The most recent time I went, I ordered a 1/2 rack of ribs, also a special. They were perhaps the best ribs I've had from a restaurant in Charlotte.

The sides are pretty good too, such as the jalepeno cheese grits.

    1. I'd be one of the left-handed half-Italians - the capricorn one.

The company was the best part of KrazyFish and the beer second. Now, about the food - I ordered the chipotle beef tacos w/ salsa de arbol, green beans & krazy slaw(tacos come with choice of one side and krazy slaw). When the food was brought out I noticed cucumbers on my tacos and there was no slaw on the plate. The server brought me some slaw later and it was nothing special. The greens beans were down right yucky - jazzed up canned green beans. The tacos were good, if a little soggy, but I later realized that they brought me the wrong dish. I noticed on my receipt that they had rung in the bulgogi tacos - not what I had ordered.

I doubt I'd return to Krazyfish. The menu is a little too scizophrenic for my tastes.

      p.s. Good post, virgo, left-handed half-Italian. What say you scorpio left-handed half-Italian???

The menu is chaotic and very large and that may be why it wasn't to our expectation. They've bitten off more than they can chew?

Icky, I saw those grits on the menu and kicked myself later for not ordering them over the beans.

I guess between us ordering the wrong things and the server bring us the wrong things we just had an off experience?? Ickymettle knows his food - he's a dude I trust. I guess maybe we need to try again.

The menu's crazy (or should I say krazy?), but that's what the place is going for and what I like about it for a place like this. It''s a place that could be very hit-or-miss food-wise, but you're generally going to get something you don't usually have and it won't cost you too much. The fact that it's so close to me and my girlfriend also makes it a nice place to stop in and have an inexpensive meal. I probably wouldn't drive across town to go there. But it's very representative of the part if town it's in.

Now their service, while friendly, is almost always an adventure, and I don't mean that in a good way. But it's never ruined my experience. In fact, we always end up laughing and joking about it. It's the kind of place where you might expect that.

I've probably been there about 5 or 6 times, and I'd say my food was, at worst, decent on one occasion, then good on several occasions, and great on two occasions.

Every now and then K.C., the owner, will be experimenting with some new dish and will just bring it out to you for free, saying, "I just came up with this idea, have it and tell me what you think." One time he handed me a plate of some spicy shrimp tacos that were pretty tasty.

In a nutshell, I think to best appreciate Krazy Fish, you have to approach it with a stoner-like mentality.

Funny you mention the service. I was going to comment on that but then thought, well, this is the kind of place one expects quirky service so who cares!? (Bringing the entirely wrong order may cross the boundaries of quirky though.)

The IPA beer rec was good though I've already forgotten what it was.

Yeah, I actually had excellent service there once and then it's been either mediocre or pretty bad. They haven't screwed my order up yet, however.

I love your final thought - "you have to approach it with a stoner-like mentality" - so true! I think we approached it knowing that it was meant to be wacky and it was certainly cheap, but it would have been nice to have gotten what I ordered. But I certainly can appreciate it's Krazy charm and convenience for you, ickymettle. It ain't so convenient for me, however.

I'll give it another go one day, perhaps.

                2. re: ickymettle

Totally agree w/ickymettle. You hit the nail on the head. It's a fun place, some stuff is slammin and some Okay, all descent, low prices. Cajun stuff is pretty tasty. Curry not as good as an Indian, Thai or jamaican place but tasty. Many points for being eclectic. Not fine dining but so what. It's a far cry from fast food and pretty darn satisfying.

          2. Third left-handed Italian checking in. I really, really wanted to like this place. I didn't want to tell my dining companions that before they got there, I heard the bartender (or one of the servers near the bar) complaining loudly of a sore throat. Ewwwww. I ordered Pad Thai which may have seemed like a strange choice but they put it on the menu for a reason. Just not good. Tiny shrimp looked like they came from a can. I asked for it spicy but it was pretty bland. Service was decent. Company was excellent. No need to go back there though.

Ha! Well, at least we had the company... and the adult beverages. ;-)
