A decent notion of what he/here is after, but it was already suggested in this topic here:

You mean a fermenting crock or a clay pot to cook in?

okay, this might be best on a Canadian board, as it seems you are looking for a decent kitchen store?

To further rasputina's thread - do you want a low, wide pot, like a cazueala, or a stewing pot, or something like a chicken brick or a Romertopf (sp?) baker?

I'm guessing he or she is looking for a Römertopf ( only because I don't know of any other German clay pots)? Not sure where you can get one in Canada but Amazon sells some as do some other online stores.

                You can buy them http://www.romertopfonline.com/

Where did you hear about such a pot? Why German?

I used to cook in clay pots way back about 20 yrs ago in India we had to season the pots and they could be used on stove top, the food cooked in these clay pots used to taste excellent, recently I found one pot in a store and wondered if I could cook in it on stovetop but the lady in the store said that they could not be used on stovetop, but still the memory kept coming back and I started to read on the internet that the food cooked in it really tastes good, only difference is you cannot cook on stove top. I do not know if there are any other clay pots available, what I saw in the store made me think that, that is the only one available.

The ones that I'm familiar with are:

Chinese sand pot - they are glazed on the inside, light sand colored on the outside. Some encased in a wire cage. They work fine on a gas flame.

Spanish cazuela - shallower, also inside glazed

                        Korean clay and stone pots

Columbian La Chamba pots - black glaze; I seen these at an upscale Williams and Sonoma store.

Paula Wolfert has a book on clay pot cooking

At the time of this post there is no mention in (Cookware) that this topic was moved from there to here (Prairie Provinces).

Most, if not all, of the clay pots you, (paulj), mentioned should be be available in Calgary.

                          @ Vasanti

Was the interior of your clay pot in India glazed? Was it tall or shallow? I assume that it's not available in Indian stores in Calgary? Perhaps we can suggest a suitable alternative. I own a Chinese sand pot that I can use on the gas stove top. I don't know if it will work on an electric stove - others might know.

I've cautiously used a sandpot on an electric coil stove (low heat etc), but to play it safe, normally use it on my butane hot plate. Once it is hot, the lowest possible flame keeps the contents bubbling away.

Tnx, I thought of recommending a butane hot plate if the stove was electric - they are inexpensive and I find, very useful. Of all the people I know in Calgary only 3, including me, have gas.

The interior of my clay pot was not glazed, they were not very shallow either. I do not think there is any clay pot available in the Indian grocery and even if they are available they are seasoned so that you can cook in it.

So you want to season it yourself.

India is a large and diverse country with many languages - What was it called and in what language or languages.

Did it look like any the the pots in the link below:

                                http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&...

                                I hope the link worked

                                Edit:
the link doesn't work but if you google 'India clay pots for cooking' and then on the left hand side of the display click on images. Pictures of various clay pots are displayed.
