Country Breakfast on the Upper West Side?

  • 5

Can anyone recommend a restaurant that serves amazing breakfast on the Upper West Side, I am taking my mom and mother in law for a special breakfast and have been searching like crazy. We are going tomorrow morning (Friday) and the only place that seems to fit the bill is "Good Enough to Eat", I am dying to go to the Popover Cafe just to try the Popover's and strawberry butter but their other selections are not so appealing.. Pancakes and eggs are a must! Thanks

+1. And it happens that it not only fits the bill but it is quite good for its cohort

    2. I think your biggest issue is that you're looking on a weekday, which kind of limits your options. Good Enough to Eat is a fine choice. You could do Sarabeth's for something a little more refined. Nice Matin for more of a brasserie feel.

For something more "special" feeling, I'd head downtown to Maialino or Locanda Verde. But again, a lot of the more special places are weekend brunch only.

      1. I'm not a huge fan of Good Enough to Eat. It's okay, but not stand in a line for an hour good, but not many things are. Weekday waits aren't usually that bad, so if the menu looks good to you, then go for it. I do like the bacon waffles, but everything else I've had isn't too great. Biscuits are dry, pancakes just okay, and omelettes serviceable, but no great shakes.

I prefer Cafe deux Margot down the street, better coffee, good eggs, better pancakes than Good Enough in a brasserie/ cafe atmosphere. I also enjoy Fairway Cafe more than Good enough, and the pancakes (slightly larger than silver dollar) are the best on the UWS. Neither are very special occasion looking spots, but if you prefer good food over atmosphere and hype, those are my recommendations on the UWS.

I'd second Kathryn's recommendations for spots out of the UWS for weekday breakfasts.

        1. I'd second what several others have said. Good Enough to Eat is fine, but not worth a wait; their bacon is very good, I also like their apple pancake, although I am not sure if it is still on the menu. Nice Matin is good, and has more interesting food (to my mind).

If you're willing to go a LITTLE away from the UWS, I ate recently at Landmarc for breakfast. It's in the Time Warner Center by Columbus Circle. It was very good, and it was nearly empty at breakfast.

For my taste, Sarabeth's is too cutesy/precious.
