Fun restaurant with great food in Westchester?

Hi -

We're meeting up with a few friends for dinner in a couple of weeks, and wanted to pick someplace fun, with great food and drinks (cocktails, wine, beer - we like it all). A few ideas have been floated around - bartaco, arrosto, cookery - but I'd love other ideas or thoughts on the ideas we have so far. We are willing to travel anywhere in Westchester - Stamford and environs is fine too. Thanks for the help!

  1. Cookery is head and shoulders better than those other two. FWIW.

    other ideas:
    Sonora (Port Chester)
    Tarry Lodge (Port Chester)
    Aroma Osteria (Wappingers Falls)
    Sienna (Stamford)

and if you want to spend the money,
    X2O (Yonkers)

        Zitouine (Moroccan) in Mamaroneck
Watercolor Cafe in Larchmont I believe has live music some nights
Kang Suh- Korean BBQ in Yonkers (cook it yourself!)
        Eclisse Mediterranian in WP
I second Modern Barn-- great dining experience & environment

Thanks all! We frequent Moderne Barn, so we are looking to go a little farther afield. Love the ideas - I don't mind spending the money at X2O but I don't feel like that is particularly "fun" - guess I'm looking for something a little more casual. I was looking at Eclisse when I thought it was still a Med/Persian mixture, but now it looks more family style Italian - is that true?

Yes its' true. I have no idea why they changed it after such great write ups. My boss went there and loved it then went back and it was family style Italian!

Zitoune is a great recommendation. The food is wonderful and it's a very fun place.

Eclisse has changed it's menu already.......... not for the better

          3. Red Hat or Mima in Irvington.
Encore Bistro (no real "bar) in Larchmont.
Cafe of Love in Mount Kisco.
            Tap House in Tuckahoe.
            808 Bistro in Scarsdale.
            Lolita in Byram.
And bartaco is worth a try.

            1. Lolita in Byram and Bellota atop the Ritz in WP are my top picks for fun places with good food and drinks. Cookery is possibly the best food in Westchester though (my opinion!), and can be fun (and loud). No reservations for parties less than 6 though

cookery is the loudest place I have ever been to, food is good though. Love Cafe of Love & Aroma Osteria.

Yelp had a review last week, pretty favorable too.

                2. I would second everyone's ideas on Cookery and Lolita. Cookery has amazing food and a buzzy vibe ( some people find it too loud) and Lolita, while very loud, is really a lot of fun if you are looking for great drinks and a vibrant scene. The Tap House is a great pick for solid, delicious food in a warm atmosphere where nobody cares if your table laughs a bit too hard. I would also recommend Mima in Irvington. Yum!! But some people find it too small. How about Nessa? Really fun vibe, awesome wine list and terrific food that's perfect for sharing, discussing and enjoying.
I want to like Tarry Lodge so badly, but every time we go, the service is so bad that it really kills the experience for us. I won't go on and on about it, but I find the service indifferent, indignant and disconnected. I would completely skip bartaco. The food is totally subpar and while the service is very good, it just doesn't make up for the fact that it's so-so food and they don't take a reservation for less than 10 so good luck as you get bumped from here to eternity as you wait. I'd also skip Arrosto. The food and scene leave a lot to be desired.
I'm told that ZaZa in Stamford is really fun, with very good food, but I haven't had the chance to try it myself yet. Have fun!

                  1. Had a Great dinner at Cienega in New Rochelle, latin food

                    1. Wow, such great ideas - thanks so much everyone! (And fwiw, I concur on Zitoune - went there recently with a group of friends and had a great time. Looking to try something different this time though!)

                      1. There's a relatively new Turkish/Russian place in Hartsdale called Bosphorus that has belly dancing on certain nights (believe Fridays) and the food is fresh, great and reasonably priced. Had a variety of meze to start recently followed by the grilled burata...fabulous. Valet parking, too. Judging from the crowd on a recent Sat., word is out. Call for a res.

                        1. Peekskill area Hounds all buzz about the Birdsall House-- extremely lively place, live entertainment on weekends. I haven't been but those that have can chime in...

(I assume "fun" implies something more than food going on at the place-- the crowd, the noise, the entertainment)

Thanks so much everyone - I have a great list for our nights out! We tried Sonora with our friends, and had a phenomenal time - the food, atmosphere, service, drinks were all terrific. Looking forward to making my way through the rest of the list!
