Great food near US Grant hotel or USD or UCSD???

Hounders! Taking our Senior daughter to check out college there in a couple of weeks. Staying at the US Grant. All types of food and no price limit. Obviously, Our last child at home and she is deciding between San Francisco and San Diego. Thanks!!!

If I wanted to do fine dining actually close to UCSD, I'd go to A.R. Valentien at the Lodge at Torrey Pines. You also have Donovan's Prime Steak at the UTC. It puts out a nice steak and there is also a Roy's in UTC. Other than that going into downtown La Jolla is your best option for UCSD.

There isn't much in the way of fine dining near USD and it sure isn't Andre's that is about as bad an imitation of Cuban food as you will ever find. Taking Linda Vista (the street USD is on) east will put you in the heart of San Diego's Asian community and there are any number of very good Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Viet and Korean places there if that is of interest.

The Grant Grill in the US Grant is one of the better restaurants in the Gaslamp, other places that are notable are Searsucker, another Donovan's, Cowboy Star (also steak), another Roy's Hawaiian Fusion, Cafe Chloe and Candelas for upscale Mexican, but you are really better served to get out of the downtown area for "great".

Ended up having a simple lunch on USD campus and doing the Grant Grill for dinner in our hotel which was beautiful, excellent food and wait staff! Desserts had our daughter disappointed ! More savory than sweet!

      Alfonso's for nachos and marg's.

US Grant Hotel is a lovely 5*..Grant Grill is fab
Dobson's for the mussel bisque en croute is excellent and burgers too.
Basic for pizza is excellent..Fish Market Downtown at the Oyster Bar or sushi.

UCSD is about 10 min from downtown La Jolla, where you have George's California Modern, Tapenade, and Nine-Ten. Or you can drive 10 minutes north to Carmel Valley where you can dine at Addison, the best fine dining restaurant in San Diego, IMO.

If you at UCSD, and do not want to take the time to leave campus for lunch, the best option (in my opinion) is the Zanzibar Cafe on the 2nd floor of Price Center East. Another option, which is probably the best of the fast food joints, is Croutons, in the second floor of the Student Services Center (where you probably will start and perhaps end your day).

For US Grant, check out threads on the gaslamp.

For USD, Andre's cuban is good. It doesn't transport you to Miami or Havana or anything, but is a good option if you want that kind of food.

UCSD, you could go to the Lodge at Torrey Pines or check out the La Jolla threads.
