Gret Neck, LI eats
Thinking about treating my mother in law to a nice but simple and casual lunch this Sunday.
She keeps kosher in the house but she eats at a non Kosher restaurant as long as they are either salad or simply prepared fish. She usually eats just salad, maybe cob salad for lunch.
Any place in Great Neck or near GN? It will be with a 3 yr old toddler and we eat everything.

Will try Lola next time.
As long as I am asking, who has the best bagels in Great Neck. I feel like GN should have the best bagels in the country but all the bagels I've had from that town were disappointing.

Bagel Hut up Middleneck road has the best bagels in Great Neck. Now, depends on how you like your bagels. Bagel Hut makes them on the small side, and if you ask they will give you one well done. They also will always check the back by the oven if you like them hot. To me they are excellent. Also, I love Lola, so much so that I am a regular. I did not suggest it though because you wanted something simple and that is exactly what Lola is not. Next time convince your mil to stretch a little and try the small plates menu, at least you will be happy.

Bagel Hut is very good, but I would say they are second best. In my opinion, the best bagels in GN are at Bagel Man, which is located in the HMART plaza on Great Neck Rd just off Northern Blvd. Their egg onion bagels are sublime.

That is my go to spot for a bagel sandwich when I want bacon. In fact the bacon, egg and cheese on a toasted flat is a terrific sandwich. I will try the egg and onion bagel on my next visit. On a related note, I don't think much of the flats at Bagel Hut and prefer the ones from Bagel Man or Annie's.

Dan, I saw your posts on another thread but will respond here. Get yourself to Lola as soon as possible. As LJP wrote, it is indeed special. Unique and delicious, you should go on Sunday for the small plates menu so you can try more dishes. Service in not a strong point but Sunday is slow and they do a better job.

My MIL recommended cafe Kritzia so we ended up eating here. I guess I should have checked their menu first because it was basically a vegetarian restaurant with salmon being the only protein on the menu. My mil ordered salmon salad but salmon was so small it shouldn't be called salmon salad...rather salad with salmon.
I didn't know what to order so I ended up ordering grilled mushroom salad which had 4 small slices of mushroom. My husband ordered the lox panini which was actually the best thing our table ordered. We also ordered hummus which was just ok(especially for a kosher place) which was served with store bought pita that wasn't even toasted properly.
The service was the slowest. The whole place was managed by one waiter who never gave us silverwares...I ended up stealing them from the next table. It took him literally 20 min to serve water. I really don't recommend this place at all.I've been to Bruce's a few times but this place basically serves diner quality food at restauarnt prices so I try to avoid this place as well.

re: Monica
I've only been to Kritzia once, and that was once too many. That's been my experience at all of the kosher places except for Tel Aviv, which lost its certification (because the owner also owns Lola, a non-kosher restaurant) and went out of business.
I agree that Lola is special - without a doubt the best restaurant in Great Neck. I agree that Bruce's is overpriced, but it fills a certain niche.
