Dinner before the Paramount Center (Peekskill)

On a Saturday night, looking for a nice venue within walking distance of the Paramount Center-- A couple places look like they have live music, not looking for that, will have enough music at the Concert!

Birdsall House menu looks good, but from the few pix I've seen, place seems a bit spartan inside...

  1. Zeph's or 12 Grapes are okay, but truth is, you'd do MUCH better with a short ride instead of a walking distance.

I'd probably go to Thyme. or Little Sorrento.

Where are these places, weedy, and can you say a little more about them. Thanks.

Zephs' has wonderful food but I wonder if it would be TOO sedate before a concert. It's usually extremely quiet... which is nice, if that's what you're looking for. Definitely make a reservation as they tend to book up on Saturday nights and won't accept walk-ins. This reminds me that it's time to go back there!

      2. I do like the food at Birdsall House but it's a madhouse on weekends and service can really suffer. Go there another time. It -is- a bit spartan inside, fyi.

I love BH and have been there frequently but for the reasons you list I don't know if I recommend it for a Saturday night. The last two times I was there I was disappointed and I think it's because they aren't great at handling huge crowds. (Last time they somehow managed to cancel one of our orders so after waiting a really long time for food one of us didn't receive ANY food and had to pick off of the other plates.) If the beer garden is open, it's especially rough since it about doubles their seating capacity, and I don't think the kitchen (or wait staff) keeps up well. Probably shouldn't be as big a problem as the weather cools down though. But I am definitely not recommending BH as heartily as I once was until they prove themselves to me again.

        2. Peekskill Brewhouse, down by the train station has a nice selection of beers, and pretty good food, too.

          1. BTW, we have to dine at about 6PM, since the event is at 8-- would that make any difference, would Birdsall or Division Street be less frenzied at this hour on Saturday?

Division Street Grill isn't great but you should be able to get a restaurant.com coupon for them (check to make sure it's good on Saturday). I'm sure they are used to getting people out in time for an 8pm show.

Thyme is on Route 202 in Yorktown. If you're coming from the Taconic , it's on your way to Peekskill. I'd recommend eating at 5:30 to give yourself time to eat and get down to Peekskill. Same for Little Sorrento.

BTW, Zephs isn't really walking distance to the Paramount. The food is good, however.

Zeph's is a major dinner, not something to rush.
I personally think it's also somewhat overrated, but either way, it doesn't fit your bill.

Division St. is simply horrible. Go there if you don't like food.

Little Sorrento is very good reliable red sauce Italian-AMerican in an ultra-casual setting.

Thyme is more of a serious meal but very, very good.
I agree to leave yourself about 1.5-2 hours to eat there.

Only Birdsall is really a walk form the Paramount. And it's pretty good, if not great. Burger is good, shrimp and grits are good; I find their charcuterie bland at best. Nice selection of beers . Make a reservation for sure.

Peekskill Brewery has improved a lot (new chef I think?) but Birdsall is mostly better.
And the Brewery is NOT a walk from Paramount either.

12 Grapes is walking distance and is reliable if unexceptional; the menu is a bit boring. It's world's better than Division though. but then, what isn't?

I would not go to Division Street. Opt for 12 Grapes rather than that. Food is ok - but this is really not a food night, right? It's decent and walking distance. I'm not familiar with Birdsall but it's got to be better than Division ST.

              3. Thyme is on Living Social today. 2 boring price fixed meals (similar to their RW menu) for $50.

First time I went to Thyme I loved it. Next time it was awful. May try a third - not sure.

                2. The service at Birdsall gives new meaning to pathetic. You may make it to the second 1/2 of the show. 12 grapes is getting better and better, they are adding new specials. music usualy starts later. Division is not good at all. Little Sorento is ok, and about a 10 minute ride, Thyme is the same distance , with mixed food and service. Zephs is very good, but you have to drive, and parking can gett a little crazy , it is much easier to park and eat before. Also- there is a new place can't remember the name with bar food across from Division, and Rubens for mexican on the same street. have fun

Sounds like a dilemma-- 12 Grapes is closed for a private party-- Is the "bar food" place across from Division St called TNH? Can't find any info on this place...

                    1. re: menton1

I love Birdsall, but I suggest you not consider it. It's quite noisy even when not full. Food is terrific.

You are expecting something from the Peekskill food "scene" that isn't realistic, especially if you have an 8 p.m. concert and wish to walk from the restaurant where you want a food and ambiance experience.

I have not been to Rubens Mexican lately. Is it still decent? It's been mentioned here, and it is certainly waling distance. I haven't been there in a few years but recalled it wasn't bad. It could be his best bet.

                        1. re: MisterBill2

I heard good things about it but I've never been there. But from what I've seen while passing by, it isn't going to meet the requirement that it be a "nice venue." It looks rather informal--my kind of place, but not what the OP is asking for. And btw, I love the ambiance, decor, flickering films on the walls, etc. of Birdsall.

                  2. What about Henry's on the Hudson?

It's located at a motel. I've never heard anything about them, good or bad. It's not walking distance.

I think you're wasting your time. You have your options within walking distance, or Little Sorentos or Thyme on Route 202 (although you probably don't want to rush through Thyme).

                    2. What did you end up doing?

                      1. There's a new Irish place on division called The Quiet Man. Haven't tried it but looks like it could be in Dublin.

Didn't go yet. Wow, anybody been to The Quiet Man? Looks like it's not bad, but the website isn't running yet. What's the menu like?

                          1. re: menton1

The menu is what you'd expect at an Irish pub...shepherds pie, fish and chips, burgers in historic, tasteful setting...
