Best Bagels Close to the Zoo??

Hi - heading with kids to Washington and want to get some excellent bagels. What's close?

Thanks in advance, Chowhounds.

I'm sorry, but I'm afraid you are out of luck, unless there is something I don't know about - if that is the case, others can chime in. I don't know of a place to get "excellent" bagels anywhere in DC, much less near the zoo. However, there is a place to get excellent pizza by the slice near the zoo (a few blocks north at Cleveland Park) -- Vace, if that is of any interest.

    Will you have a car?

Pizza slices are ALWAYS of interest - thanks :)

Here's a recent WaPost roundup of bagel places-- you'll notice most of them are in the burbs (although Bethesda Bagels is "only" about a 10 minute metro ride from the zoo). http://www.washingtonpost.com/gog/bes...

I think Open City has bagels, so that might be the closest place to the zoo but I haven't actually tried them.

edit to add: I just remembered So's Your Mom (a deli on Columbia Road in Adams Morgan) has bagels that are ok for DC.

Depending when you come, the new Bethesda Bagel north of Dupont Circle might be open by then. Probably closer than Bethesda, but still would be a long walk from the zoo.

I forgot about So's Your Mom - love that place! They have really good breakfast sandwiches there on bagels. Personally, I think it's too far to walk to the zoo from there. It would probably take 30-40 mins. They also are take-out only (no seating).

I think it's about a mile from the front door of the zoo (CT ave), but if you walk downhill through the zoo and go out the back, it would be (even) more convenient.

Aren't So's Your Mom bagels H&H bagels that were frozen and delivered from New York? I remember reading that somewhere...
