Santa Monica Saturday Night 9 for dinner

Helene Goldberg Nov 6, 2011 03:31 PM

I would like a pleasant quiet restaurant with good food for 9 people on Sat. night in Santa Monica or Venice. Any cuisine as long as its good.

Catch at Casa Del Mar fits the request perfectly.

This board is getting really smart. I love FIG like a family member but I don't think it will be quiet on Saturday night. Now with a 9 top, you might end up being the people that make the noise, but there are a lot of hard surfaces and ambient noise. It is hard for me to ever not recommend this place. Same with Rustic Canyon. If you are playing a game of when it will or will not get loud, that is tough. And with daylight savings time, people will tend to be going out a little earlier. I like Sam's--I live near the canyon and go to H-Cat/Sam's/The Bull/Delfifni and GB often--but I am not sure it is right for your party of 9. Though if you like to get your drink on, there are good bars on either side of Sam's (H-Cat and Hideout) for after dinner (though they are TOTALLY different in feel and experience).

      What about Hosteria del Piccolo?

If you have no budget--in addition to the Melisse and Josie's recs--Capo, Valentino, Vincenti (though this is Brentwood) or Michael's.

Tell us where you go and how it turns out!

You didn't mention a budget, but Josie's or Melisse are both great and conversation isn't a struggle at either.

Sam's at the Beach (aka Sam's) - next to The Hungry Cat in Santa Monica Canyon. Very quiet.

Get the specials. Fish is especially fresh.

Rustic Canyon? OP asks for quiet and Rustic Canyon is recommended? That's like requesting Kosher and being directed to Animal. (I don't mind noisy restaurants myself).

I suggested Rustic Canyon at 6:00 PM.
It doesn't get noisy until around 7:30.

What maudies5 says is true. Not too noisy till 7:30- 8 PM. Go early and enjoy.

In addition to the places mentioned in this thread http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/784626 you should check with Fig as well as Tavern in Brentwood.

+1 for Fig. Great Food. I also really like Rustic Canyon but it can get noisy in there after 8pm.

                +2 for Fig
(be sure to get a cheese flight as part of your meal.)

Rustic Canyon is a lot of fun for a party that size. We have done that. Make your reservation no later than 6PM or the noise at 7:30 will drive you crazy.

Rustic Canyon's food is so good I find myself not caring about any noise around me.
Seriously....it doesn't take long to adapt to the noise level and it certainly wouldn't 'drive me crazy' given the quality and taste of that food.

Their crispy white polenta with wild mushrooms sunny side up egg and reggiano is one of those dishes I find myself wanting to drive through any traffic at any time of day to get.

Oh...and BTW I was there last night @ 8pm with friends for almost 3 hours.

was just at fig with this size group.
i dug fig, a lot, but it is not quiet.
with nine, they will probably put you in a kind of secluded little area behind the bar, with a really large -- too large for nine -- table.
the size of the table and the general tenor of the place make communicating a little tough. and, make sure they assign two waiters to take your order.
they were all nice people, but very slow.
food and drinks were swell, though.

the name of the manager at FIG is Matthew.
if you have any concerns like this about forthcoming service and seating, i'd call him up and talk with him about them beforehand.
