Motorino Questions...

Going to be in the city with a group of 4-6. Planning on going to Motorino around 8. My question is...is that possible? Do they take reservations, and if not would we be able to walk in and get a table in a reasonable amount of time?

Also, I'd like to get a drink and a bite somewhere before, and was thinking DBGB. We're staying at the Hilton Fashion District, don't mind cabs as long as we're in the same general area, does that sound like a decent plan, or is there another place we should be going to?
Thanks in advance...

  1. What night of the week? Motorino doesn't take reservations. I think that will be a long wait, especially since most of their tables are for two or four. They'll have to combine tables to make one big enough for 6 or 8.

For a cocktail and a bite beforehand, you have a fair amount of of options. If you like rum, try El Cobre or Cienfuegos. For tequila and mescal drinks, try Mayahuel. For gin cocktails, Vandaag. These can usually handle a big group pretty well. There's also The Beagle and the bar at Momofuku Ssam Bar, and the two bars (both floors) of Peels.

Unfortunately the top tier cocktail places like PDT or Death & Co will probably not be able to accommodate your group size. PDT would work if you call at 3pm that day and get a reservation, but it's a small bar. Death & Co might work if you arrive before 7pm and snag one of the big booths (they only have two).

DBGB is NOT known for cocktails. Stick with beer there.

Our pre-Motorino cocktail venue is always Vandaag. You can call Motorino on your way and put yourself on their list. Fridays and Saturdays will be busy at 8, but still, in my opinion, worth any wait.

We like beers at Drop Off Service over on Ave A (3 bucks before 8pm, though also busy on fridays/saturdays especially for the last hour of happy hour from 7-8)

    2. I've done larger groups than that at equally prime hours on friday or saturday at motorino - it wasnt terribly comfortable (as kathryn says, they are built for 2's and 4's) and there was a certain amount of "will person x who says they will be here in 10 minutes actually make it so we dont "lose" that table we need to add to the adjacent one" agita but it can, definitively, be done.

      1. Have seen tables with parties of 6 a few times before. 8 pm will be busy and wait times will vary depending on day of the week.

        1. Op here....should have mentioned going mon or tues night

It'll be shorter on a Monday or Tuesday but I think it will really depend if you are 4 people or 5-6 people.

For 4 people, you can just wait until one of the regular 4-tops clears. If you're 5-6, they will have to push three adjacent 2-tops together.

You can definitely get lucky there and land a short wait. Terroir is down the street. Great wine bar if there's alot of time to kill.

          2. The place is really cramped. I wouldn't want to base a set of plans around a large group there, especially if you're concerned about wait times. I sounds like extra stress which could be avoided. Best of luck if you do go for it.
