Food near MKE airport

My husband and I find ourselves at MKE nearly every weekend. (ugh). We have just moved to the midwest so we are rather green. We are looking for pleasant places to have a meal near the airport perhaps with take out that travels well. Any and all recs please! We don't eat a lot of meat, and like places with attention to vegetables and legumes, but won't say no to an amazing grilled cheese sandwich. We love any all cuisines!

Oh - going west on Layton, Oakland Gyro, the Pakastani Grill and the grocery next to it are decent.
A place to avoid is Branded Steer off of College. There used to be a medeival themed place in front of the Pakastani grill. I do not know if they are there anymore, but they had some decent food. Prices kept changing as they were getting settled in, but I enjoyed the two times I ate there. Much better than the IHOP across the street :)

I recently attended an all-day seminar at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Milwaukee Airport on 13th Street just south of College Avenue and the airport. For lunch, we ate at the hotel's restaurant, Altitude, and it was very pleasant. The lunch menu was heavy on salads, sandwiches and soups and there was fish, if that is an option, and the quality was fresh. The service was attentive, especially for a weekday, and the atmosphere relaxing. It won't make you forget any of the fine dining spots around town, but I will give them props for doing something better than the average hotel restaurant (they actually had Ahi tuna). It would be a peaceful choice before hitting the airport. The hotel also has a Park n Fly special so that when you stay at the hotel, you can leave your car in their parking lot and take their shuttle to the airport.

Sorry I do not remember the name - right next to the Denny's - a "new" BBQ joint. Their sliced brisket is good, (the pulled was OK), the kid loves their ribs (I think they are above average).
Perhaps called Puddle Jumpers? Next to the Denny's on Howell.

I often get fruit and veggies at the Layton Fruit Market on Layton - turn right on Layton at the Howell and Layton interchange and it will be on the left after a few blocks. More than a few times when I was sent out of town on a minutes notice I hit there before the airport to get snacks.

Ugh is not the best thing to say about Milwaukee if you wish to make friends. :-)

I thought you were moving to the Madison area?

Our situation is complicated. We live part of the time in Madison and part of the time elsewhere which means many, many trips to the airport, which is the Ugh. Not the city of Milwaukee. But we need food recs!

If you're driving between Madison and Mitchell, do you really need to eat near the airport, where options are limited, or could you eat along the way? Why couldn't you eat at places anywhere between the two, which means anything convenient to I-94/I-894 (and even going via downtown Milwaukee isn't much out of the way)? It would give you a lot more selection to choose from.

Also, it's not clear whether you do or don't eat meat. The reason I mention it is, Polonez is a very good Polish restaurant in the St Francis neighborhood near (northeast of) Mitchell, but the menu is very meat-centric.

You put that so much more nicely than I did. ;-) "Limited" is a kind term. :-)

Sometimes you do need to eat near the airport. If you are driving to the airport, it's nice to know there is a place you can get takeout from and eat at the airport instead of buying over-priced food there, if you are making good time and don't eat into the allowance you should make in case of traffic or other problems.

Or, after a long return flight, you might be so hungry that you want to get to a restaurant within 15 minutes.

Within 15 minutes drive of Mitchell (in non-commuting hours), you could be at Crazy Water in Walkers Point, Hinterland or the Milwaukee Public Market in the Third Ward, or almost any place in downtown Milwaukee.

And don't forget Capital Grille. Easily 15 minutes from Mitchell and the best restaurant in Wisconsin. :-)

Unless you like bar food or strip clubs there is really nothing impressive very close to General Billy Mitchell Field. If you would care to eat a bit north of there on your way to I-94 West you can find a vast array of ethnic restaurants on Lincoln Avenue. Everything from Polish to Mexican to Serbian. Bay View also has some interesting dining options. I guess it depends upon what you are looking for.
