any good Chinese restaurants near Freehold?
I know Edison is where it action is so to speak, but since I live near East Windsor and go shopping on weekends in Freehold, I was hoping that there was something decent near Freehold Raceway Mall.

West Lake Chinese Restaurant on Route 34 is 12.5 minutes from the Freehold Raceway Mall (according to Google Maps). There are quite a few reviews here.

re: drongo
don't think this is correct. l think 12.5 is the distance in miles. it takes at least 25 min to go from the mall to West Lake.
I like West Lake and Shanghai Bun in Matawan much more so that any offerings from Crown Palace. The OP lives around East Windsor so it is probably too far a drive from Matawan back to that area.-----

I tried out the Shanghai Bun in Edison recently. Like it alot.
I have yet to try Noodlelicious on Rt 27. They were closed mid-Sunday afternoon.
Since I don't eat raw sushi, I'd lose money at places like Tokyo Sushi buffet.
I gave Hunan House in East Windsor two tries via takeout. Both times very mediocre.

There's a Shanghai Bun in Edison? That's great! I go to the one in Matawan a lot and also Westlake Seafood right up the street from it. Btw - I agree with yCf. I drive too fast and know all the back roads, but there is no way I am getting from the mall to either place in under 35 minutes or more. Maybe as the crow flies, but even then I doubt it.

re: seal
Yes, the ShangHai Bun in Edison is in the strip mall behind Kam Man Food Market (across from Penang, in the same strip mall as the Korean place). I have not been to either Shanghai Bun for a while but the menu is slightly different. Both places are good though.
Been to Noodlelicious once, absolutely love it. Noodles are great but I especially love their "noodle bar" style. Walk in, sit down, check off what you want on a sheet of paper, eat and leave.

re: drongo
Recently went to Ming Ying Long Branch and were thrilled! I know it is a trip from Freehold, but I can't remember where I read that recomendation! I just wanted to say it was much appreciated!
Where is Noodleicious? Also, any other recs I would be most thankful.
Oh...is it just me? We have been to West Lake many many times. Last visit the food was not up to par. I hope someone will say I was wrong. Our party of four were all quite dissapointed, hopefully this was a one time only and worthy of another trip.

re: EL7
Noodlelicious is in Edison, in the small strip mall of Rt27 on the other side of Plainfield Ave. from the new Hmart.
Do you have Dim Sum at West Lake or dinner? Dim Sum is usually solid in West Lake. I had dinner a few times; nothing amazing. Definitely better than Crown Palace, Marlboro but not as good as Wonder Seafood in Edison.

re: yCf
Thanks YCF ! We had dinner at West Lake only and not impressed. It was good one time, ok the next, and not good at all the last time. However, will try it for Dim Sum as you suggest. Wonder is our favorite restaurant, however I keep hoping to find something else also. Tonight we brought home take out from Ming Ying in Long Branch once again. REALLY GOOD! This is a 1/2 hour trip for us, but well worth it. We had pork dumplings, shrimp dumplings, seafood noodle soup, bean curd with vegetables in black bean sauce. Everything was excellent except the black bean sauce.. wouldn't get that again. The shrimp dumplings were best I have ever had.. and I frequently order them!

If you're really desperate, there's always a P.F. Chang's at the Freehold Raceway Mall.
Really desperate would also include the Asian offerings in the food court. :)
Me, I like Freehold Grand Buffet (Rt 9 North, perhaps a mile south of the mall). The food is decent, and there are a number of dishes you won't find on most buffets. The price is right, too; $7.99 for lunch.

:)
I saw the buffet place on Google Maps.
May give that place a try since their weekend lunch price is probably $8.99 like the one that is here in East Windsor.
I may head on over to Crown Palace when a friend visits this coming weekend.

I ended up having lunch at Freehold Grand Buffet today.
Weekend lunch is $9.99They had Chinese-style roast duck. Yum. I took a drumstick.
Their rice noodle was done well - not too wet like some places tend to make them.
Food was replenished at good pace.
Also liked their seafood soup.-

re: ieee488
I went to Freehold Grand Buffet on Friday. It was good, as usual. What threw me for a loop was that now they have a dedicated sushi area. Before, the sushi was kinda like.. press rice into a pan, layer fish on top, and cut it into rectangles. Now, the sushi actually LOOKS like sushi should look.. and there's a better selection. I had to ask.. was this included in the price, or extra? Nope, included. STILL $7.99 for lunch. I'm curious to see if they have different types of fish for the dinner buffet. For lunch they had tuna, salmon, 3 kinds of white fish, shrimp, crab stick, and a couple of others, and of course a bunch of assorted rolls.

re: MarlboroMan
Had dinner with my family at Freehold Grand Buffet tonight. This is officially my favorite Chinese buffet of all time, and I've been to a lot of them.
Very generous sashimi offerings. I had lots of super tender yellowtail. There was also albacore (most likely escolar), tuna, salmon, mackerel, and a few others. So much sashimi.. I didn't even bother with the rolls.
Dinner price was $14.95 but definitely worth it. They had all the usual stuff, plus grilled lamb (never saw that before at a Chinese buffet).. it was excellent by the way.. a bit on the spicy side, but I like spicy. Also, BBQ steak.. not the best cuts of meat, but the flavor was excellent. And the first time I've seen it there.. ginger and onion lobster! Of course, some people "camp" waiting for this to come out. Some guy in front of me took nearly all of the meaty "easy access" pieces, but I managed to grab a piece of tail for myself. Great flavor and very tender.
Great cheesecake for dessert, too! Had a coupon for 10% off, but failed to notice it read "cash only." That's okay, I'm sure I'll be back before it expires on Dec. 1!

re: ieee488
Crown Palace has okay Dim Sum. Dinner has been disastrous the last few times i went so I definitely do not recommend dinner.
It's not Chinese but Tokyo Sushi Buffet a little north of Freehold Grand Buffet is worth a try also. You can loosely classify it as Chinese since it is run by Chinese and offer a variety of Chinese dishes besides the sushi.
