Dinner with a very old person

jjdorn Nov 4, 2011 09:25 AM

Dinner tonight with my 91-year-old mother-in-law. She walks slowly, with a walker, and doesn't hear too well. She likes old-fashioned, unadventurous food (though she's willing to do unthreatening ethnic), good service, and value. Any suggestions in the Dedham-Needham-Norwood area? Thanks.

Wow, good for her! What about Aquitaine at Legacy place?

If she's hard of hearing, you want to avoid noisy places. For a quiet, non-threatening, wimpy pan-Asian, try Rice Barn in Needham. Central Cafe in the old Fava location in Needham is also supposed to be good (their menu is likely to please her), but I can't vouch for it myself as I have not tried it. And there's always Petit Robert, but that can get noisy unless you go early.

Jimmy's in Arlington Heights (ArLex) is a favorite place for many. No surprises.

While I don't know the nightlife very well, the Corrib in west roxbury is my grandmother's default. Joe's in dedham is an option if you go earlier and Conrads in norwood.

Rice Barn is a good suggestion, and the food is very good, but it's high-end Thai food, and she may freak out.

We like Bon Caldo in Norwood for our aged relatives. Very good Northern Italian food, pretty quiet, very good service.

I agree with Bon Caldo. Nice atmosphere, good food. Love the gnocchi, parms, and canelloni, nice bread.

Chiara Bistro in Westwood is very good and serves a lot of elderly people from the nearby retirement community. The food and service are quite good. That and Joe's American Bar and Grill were our go-to spots with my mother-in-law who used a walker and later a wheelchair.

I didn't even think about Chiara but that is an excellent suggestion.

Chiara is a good solution. We enjoyed it thoroughly, although she often insisted on Joe's.

Sorry I am late on this. 204 Washington street was a great suggestion, especially for prime rib and reasonable prices

Olivadi's near the post office is another great place in the area.
