ROAD TRIP ...FL to LA to TX to CO to UT to to CA... Nov 2011

We're driving from FL (and stopping) through the following next week:
Marshall TX
Amarillo TX
Colorado Springs/Fountain CO
Grand Lake CO
Wendover UT
Reno NV

Traveling with animals, staying in pet friendly cheap motels, really need good recommendations for Lunch/Dinners each afternoon/evening - no fast food, (chain restaurants not preferred, but OK as a last resort) ...... would like to find decent food at reasonable prices, either dine-in or To-Go.

No fine dining (can't leave animals in motel long) or alcohol. We love good food, and ethnic foods, don't care about atmosphere, just good local food, we'll be tired from the road.

Any suggestions are very much appreciated! Thanks!

  1. Not hitting much in the way culinary hotspots, but I can think of a few places that fit your bill. They'd be at the top of my list if I was following your itinerary.

In CO Springs seek out Conway's Red Top. Several locations around town. Hamburgers unlike any other, good homemade soups and stews.

Used to make the run to Reno 5 or 6 times a year from UT. My favorite stop along the way was The Griddle in Winnemucca. Solid all-American diner fare, sometimes with a Southwestern twist. Always great service. Only open for breakfast and lunch if I recall.

When driving through Amarillo I like to time it so I can have breakfast at The Big Texan... the steak house famous for the 72-oz. steak dinner challenge. The steaks are top notch, and way less expensive at breakfast.

I appreciate the suggestions - Thank you - please keep the ideas coming!

    2. On your way to Wendover, take the last Utah exit (Bonneville Speedway exit) and hit the Salt Flats Cafe. It's in the gas station on your right as you pull off. It's delicious, authentic Mexican food. When we're out for Speedweek we skip Wendover proper completely and hit the Salt Flats Cafe. There's nothing in Wendover I'm aware of other than mediocre buffets and fast food.

Be sure to drive out to where the salt flats begin, it's just a few moments of your time & is an amazing sight. Have fun!!

      ETA great prices. Very cheap.
