Coming to NYC in early December. Looking for authentic but upscale Thai restaurant. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  1. What you are looking for does not exist here, and even in Bangkok the best Thai is not upscale...for a wonderful Thai-influenced place, you could try Kin Shop, which uses Thai ingredients and is wonderful but isnt Thai food per se. Others may rec Kittichai, i havent been in years and years ago it was not remotely authentic but it may have changed, though i doubt it.

Agree on both points. Kin shop may be your best bet.

We were at Kittichai about 6 months ago. They have a new chef from Australia. The food was generally good. It was fine. Though if it's great food you are after there are better.

    2. I am a major fan of both Kin Shop and Kittichai. Neither is traditional Thai, but they are both contemporary versions that are nonetheless delicious, with very serious chefs.

      1. Lotus of Siam is in a pleasant, upscale space. Last I went, shortly before the Chutimas pulled out (http://blogs.villagevoice.com/forkint...), the food was reasonably authentic, but mediocre to just ok in terms of quality. They do have a pretty good wine list, which they inherited from Cru, the restaurant that was formerly in that space. Probably, you should try to find a more recent review than mine, though.

        1. Definitely Kin Shop -- I was very surprised and impressed by how authentic it was in such a pleasantly modern atmosphere!

I love the food at Kin Shop, BUT....

            - While it's pleasant and nicely decorated, I don't think I'd call it upscale (if by "upscale" you mean fancy pants). Tboner, you can see a few (badly taken) pics of the interior here: http://www.girleatscity.com/2010/10/k...

            - A lot of the food is "modern Thai", not traditional Thai. It is in general well made food, using good ingredients. There are some snapshots of the food here:
