16th Street & Bethany Home has come alive! Come see, eat, drink, enjoy!
The area around the intersection of 16th Street & Bethany Home Road has REALLY taken off! The old shopping center on the southwest corner is now almost full, with at least FIVE (and one more planned) eating option. Right now there's a yogurt shop next to the Phoenix City Grille, the long-standing Pizza Hut, the (relatively) new Zipps Sports Bar, and the long-standing Taco Bell ( I know, I know), and another Tex-Mex joint is supposed to be going in where the Chevron station was, right on the corner.
On the northwest corner there is now a cupcake bakery, the Garage (a sort of yuppie sports bar), Dick's Hideaway, and C.J.'s Talley's Pub (go to Talley's on Thursday nights for their special!). Just north of that there is the long-standing Golden Phoenix Chinese restaurant, and the Asahi (Japanese) bakery.
On the northeast corner is the long-standing Tex-AZ Grill, and the relatively new Vig Uptown is just north of that.
On the southeast corner is the long-standing Starbucks, and the Swizzle Inn bar.
The only thing this intersection doesn't have is an entertainment venue? (Any offers out there???) Even some sort of live music in any of the existing spaces would draw a huge crowd.
Farther away, just north on 16th Street, of course, is the Rokerij, with Richardsons opening SOON, we hope. Just north of Maryland Street, on the west side, are the 16th Street Sports Bar and the Europa Polish Bakery/Deli.
This area is GREAT! Come look, see, taste, drink!

Can anyone confirm if Richardson's has actually opened? Someone once told me about that place and the awesome green chilies stuffed with potatoes they have there. I am heading to AZ from out of town, going to Sedona (flying into PHX), and was thinking about stopping there for lunch on the way up. Is it true I can still get them at Rokerij? Thanks :)

It's my understanding that the menu from Richardson's is available at Rokerij. He's not rebuilding the original site; he's expanding at the Rokerij location.

The area definitely has changed. I have lived in that neighborhood for well over 20 years and it is really different than it was back in the olden days. The Tex-Mex joint you mention will be a free standing Z-Tejas. I believe Richardson's was to open November 1st.
Within say 2-3 square miles of that area is a wide range of foodie offerings including those mentioned above as well as St. Francis and Windsor.
