Pho Yum opens in Colonie with Vietnamese food.

The folks who own My Linh's Vietnamese restaurant on Delaware Av in Albany have opened a new place that looks to be trying to attract folks with a simpler and less costly style of Vietnamese cooking. The menu concentrates on variations of Pho (soup), Banh Mi (sandwiches), Bun (rice noodle dishes), and Summer rolls (not fried).

They are located at 1558 Central Av. across from Smokey Bones. This is the same location where Mino's Sushi Thai was once located, and then three other Asian restaurants.

My wife and I stopped in and tried some of each of the above. Any item from the categories above costs less than $10.

There are 10 different pho, 7 Banh Mi, 8 Bun, 7 Summer rolls, desserts, coffee, tea, smoothies, and soda.

We were very pleased with the food and the service. We've eaten at the original My Linh's in the past so some of the food was not new to us, but I've never seen such a selection of pho before. Since I wanted to try something different, I had pho with tripe, tendon, and beef eye round. The flavors were fantastic. The tendon surprised me by not being as chewy as I was expecting. It might even be the first time I enjoyed eating tripe. The beef broth was very flavorful.

Never having had a banh mi I didn't know what to expect. I ordered what was billed as a "classic" ham banh mi with house-made pate, butter, black pepper and soy sauce. These sandwiches are served on a toasted baguette (from a bakery in Great Barrington, MA) with cucumber, cilantro, scallions, pickled carrots and radishes. The baguette was very fresh and all the above ingredients blended into some excellent flavors. I was also able to taste a vegetarian banh mi made with grilled tofu and could see me ordering those in the future also.

Two other dishes we enjoyed were the tofu and gluten Summer roll (Bi Chay) and a chicken Bun (rice noodle) dish.

I have eaten there twice and had great meals also. I have had the pho with beef eye round, shrimp summer rolls, and grilled chicken banh mi. I enjoyed them all. It's great to have a more casual option for Vietnamese dining. I like how the ordering is done, with pads of paper listing the options and little pencils to check off what you want. We'll definitely be going back.
