What else to serve with Turkey for Thanksgiving?
Hi All -
Seems as though we're happily hosting a Thanksgiving gathering for 14 this year, and we're wondering if anyone has ideas on an additional compliment to a roasted turkey.
We'll most likely serve a stuffed Tom with mashed potatoes, squash, string beans, and other dishes, but were wondering if anyone has had any success serving something a bit different Thanksgiving wise?
We're big fans of Boston's Chinatown scene.
Do you suppose a roasted duck from Hong Kong Eatery might be an interesting addition? Does HKE do a roasted chicken (resulting in a sort of Turducken thing?) Any other joints to consider?
Haven't really explored Chinatown that extensively recently as I don't get there that often now that I work in the western 'Burbs, but looking for ideas from you all!
Thanks in advance!

The answer is "whatever your guests will eat". Remember that some people do not feel right unless they have a proper Thanksgiving with all the trimmings.
I grew up eating goat and fish (with Turkey as the figurative guest of honor) at Thanksgiving because no one in my family was used to or liked turkey. But despite years of that, I freak out if there is not the obligatory cranberry sauce and stuffing and pie because I feel that I have not performed the holiday ritual.
As far as my opinion on what you should do, I think that if you are going to swerve away from tradition, then go all out. A duck is just another bird. Why don't you try lamb and two or three non-American side dishes. Can you get or make sesame pancakes or roti or fried rice? What about something tropical like fried plantains or pastelitos?
Whatever you do be sure to come back and tell us how they liked it....
dw, fun idea. i would highly recommend a small tweak to your idea: Tea Smoked Duck. It's served room temp, which is a plus, and the smokiness gives it that much of a difference from the turkey. The best I have had in Boston is in Kendall Sq., Cambridge at Mulan. they call it Smoked Duck . Just delectable ! and would go really well w/ a butternut squash dish. If your family does finger foods before dinner, another Mulan treat is slices of Smoked Beef and Leek roll-ups in Scallion Pancakes. Guaranteed to disappear fast!

Thanks Opin' Chef - Like your thinking!
We're in the western 'burbs, and wondering if the new Mulan in Waltham has the same Tea Smoked Duck as the Cambridge joint does. Checked the menu online, but didn't see Tea Smoked.
House Duck A44 maybe?
Smoked Beef and Leek roll-ups sound like a good hors d'oeuvre...
