Birthday celebration for my husband - alternative to INK

Really wanted to take my huband to dinner for his birthday at INK, but the days around his birthday are booked. Can you recommend another nice restaurant with a lot of great buzz about the chef/food? I'm looking for something fairly new, maybe open the past year as I'd like to take him someplace new. Any kind of food, staying in the LA area (not greater LA area).

If I can't find something else, thinking about Cut.

You might check out Animal or Son of A Gun. Both restaurants from the same chef's Jon Shook and
    Vinny Dotolo.

My favorite new restaurant is Manhattan Beach Post and it's great chef driven small plates from David LeFevre.

I probably wouldn't go to Glejina anymore because of this: http://la.eater.com/archives/2011/11/.... A C? Seriously? At a restaurant like that? Makes you wonder..

I liked Son of a Gun, but you've really got to be in the mood for rich, rich, rich food that night. The portions seem small, but somehow you're completely full after--probably all the butter and whatever else magical ingredients they put in there..

I drove by Gjelina last night and they had their "A" Health code rating back.

Cannot recommend Red Medicine highly enough!!! Called ahead to request a tasting menu and the experience was sublime. Same price point as (if not sllghtly lower than) INK. With food that was far more polished and inventive... Afraid it seems like I'm fawning everytime I mention this place but it is unequivocally the best - most inventive - dinner I've experienced in L.A. in the last 5 years for the price.

What is the ambience like at Red Medicine? Seating, space, etc.

Very similar to Ink's. Both have an open, semi-industrial feel to them with a large focus of the space going to the Bar area. The main difference for me was that, although Red Medicine doesn't have Ink's open kitchen area, RM felt much more comfortable than Ink - most likely because we didn't feel as rushed through our dinner as we did at Ink.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I actually forgot that Animal and Tasting Kitchen were ones on my husband's list to try next. I will also look into Red Medicine.
