Help some new parents with special occasion / date night dinner?

Hubby and I have a toddler and presently only get into the city twice a year now for special occasion dinners. I'm so out of the loop as to the best places to dine these days - can you please make some suggestions for where we should go next month as our holiday gift to each other? It needn't be a 4 star restaurant - something new and exciting is just as welcome as a really well-reviewed place, but since we can get a real date night dinner like this so rarely, we'd hate to pick poorly. Delicious food is priority #1, but atmosphere and service shouldn't be ignored (aka, no Peter Luger's ;). Our last few meals were Del Posto (terrific meal), Momofuku Ko (fun experience), Veritas (awesome wine, lacking in the food department), and Bouley (some highs, some lows, plus bizarre service). We tend towards French, but we're up for nearly anything. Help, please?

  1. I've had some fabulous lunches lately at Cafe Boulud, and would heartily recommend it. And would suggest starting off the evening at the bar next door (in the hotel), Bar Pleiades, with a Pisco Sour. Available even if not on the drinks menu.

    1. No Peter Luger's, but STK is pretty sexy, and BLT Steak is a good date steak place for conversation - if you were feeling steak. I've had great experiences at River Cafe in DUMBO - a quick cab ride and with views of the city. Wish you the best for date night!
