Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Quebec (including Montreal)

Montreal in 5 days - Where to eat?!

I'll be in Montreal for five days in a couple of weeks. Where should I make sure I visit? Breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee suggestions gratefully received.

I love most types of food done well. From street food to mid-price. Asian, Indian, North American - serve it well and I'll eat it.

  1. You're going to have a lot of people tell you to search the boards for suggestions. There are a lot of restaurants that are recommended regularly.

Montreal is a great eating city, but street food is illegal and I'd say that Asian and Indian are not our strongest offerings. Depending on where you're coming from you might not be too impressed with these specific cuisines (though there are exceptions: Kazu is great Japanese at lunch or dinner, and there are a number of good vietnamese restaurants if you search for them).

What IS done well is French-inspired food, market-driven food (despite our short growing season), etc.

Where are you staying? Breakfast is hard to recommend unless we know where you're willing to travel early in the morning. By and large, brunches are available only on the weekends, but I'd recommend Chien Fumant, Fabrique, Lawrence, Reservoir, but there are so many other great options.

The following are restaurants that I enjoy for dinner, and are unique to Montreal in that they serve their style of food better than many other places in the world:
    - the ubiquitous Au Pied de Cochon
    - Joe Beef/Liverpool house or Chien Fumant
    - Club Chasse et Peche (or its sibling le Filet)

These are French/Quebecois-leaning. Look around the board for more suggestions.

The best coffee in the city can depend on where you happen to be standing. Myriade is the best downtown, Cafe St. Henri is the best in the West, In Gamba or Neve is the best in the plateau, and maybe Cafe Olimpico keeps its crown in parts to the north (Mile End).

Hope you enjoy yourself! Give us some more details if you want more specific suggestions...
