Visiting LA 11/4-11/11

  • 5

I adore vodka infusions and craft cocktails....looking for some good spots.

Any sights I should see-perhaps some atypical suggestions....hole in the wall, artsy, ethnic, underground, animal/wildlife encounters, etc.

  1. There are many, many great spots for cocktails - LA's Pulitzer Prize winning critic Jonathan Gold did this write up about 2 years ago. It is called "The New Cocktailians" and might be your best place to start http://www.laweekly.com/2009-03-05/ea... I think for a combination of interesting food and cocktails you should look at the Julian Cox curated bars at places like Rivera, Playa, Sotto, Picca.

As for ethnic atypical suggestions, you may need to be more specific for us to help you - LA is huge - where will you be staying and what do you like? Atypical ethnic/artsy/hole-in-the-wall places abound -- finding them, however, can take you in many delicious but disparate directions (south to Little Saigon for Vietnamese food, east to San Gabriel for Chinese, etc).

    1. as Bob said, LA is huge and has numerous options.
Julian Cox is the cocktail king of LA, so definitely try his stuff. The restuarants listed below by Bob are a good start.
bars: La Descarga, Edison and The Standard.
ethnic: LA is the king of ethnic..tons of options. One you might want to try is korean bar, Dang Sung Sa.

many many more, but let us know where, budget, etc and the replies will flow in

And the Varnish (if one is downtown) should be on the short list for bars as well.

      2. In downtown LA look at The Association, the Standard, The Edison, Bar 107, Cole’s, Bordello, Elevate and Seven Grand.

In Hollywood/West Hollywood look at Bar Lubitsch, especially for vodka drinks, Kass Bah, Jones, Good Luck Bar, The HMS Bounty, Hyde, W Bar and Well.

        1. just a note on rivera... my experience with receiving cocktails there was so slow that after three i wasn't even buzzed. so i'm not sure they put enough booze in their drinks or what the deal was... but i've never been back and don't plan on returning.
try this place downtown for vodka infusions... http://www.toranokola.com/
i can't recommend eating here as i never have but the melon infused vodka was AMAZING! so much so, i was inspired to try and make my own. we sit at the bar when we go and usually have a spot nearby we plan on eating at or we're killing time before we're seeing a band play nearby.
i liked the cotton candy cocktail at the bazaar VERY much.
also, maybe also consider the Bonaventure hotel bar at the top? great view of the city that circles around. with some drinks you get to keep the glass (we have a boot i drink from sometimes). drinks are strong from what i recall.
the Bounty is also great as someone else recommended -- the drinks are OK but Jack Webb used to go there and that's good enough for me. Same person recommended Good Luck Bar and i used to have a great time in there... and also, just a block away is Tiki Ti!
