  1. Give Kaffe 1668 a try. It meets the criteria you're looking for: large, open space, tables on the upper level and basement and free Wi-Fi.

I second Kaffe 1668. The basement space is great and upstairs there's a long table where you can sit and talk. We have some photos on our blog: http://smithratliff.com/2011/09/29/na...

Another option is Grounded on Jane Street. It can get a bit crowded, but they have plenty of tables and couches. (Edited to add that Grounded's WiFi can be slow/spotty...

    2. Vagabond Cafe on Cornelia Street usually isn't too crowded as it is so new.

They keep pretty strange hours though, it seems. Closed on Mondays and then they open at 11 a.m. the other days? Just odd for a coffee shop to me.

        1. re: loratliff

It's 11am-11pm because they stay open late for the live music/open mics they have. And they serve beer and wine during.

      2. Even the large places I'm going to mention below can become quite crowded depending on the time/day, but at least there are a lot of tables for turnover.

Joe the Art of Coffee's Columbia University branch has a lot of tables and Wifi (and great coffee).

        I concur with @deabot regarding Kaffe 1668.

The Think Coffee Mercer St branch is large, with many tables & free wifi.

If you don't care at all about coffee quality, there's a large spot on 14th St with many tables called Bourbon Coffee.

There are probably a lot more - this is off the top of my head.

The Mercer Street location of Think gets very crowded when NYU is in session. Additionally, the wifi is unreliable--and at least once, the employees have done nothing if it's out of service. Has the service gotten better?

yeah, the Mercer St Think Coffee is also extremely dirty, and might be an icky place to conduct interviews...

i like the Argo Tea place on University.

Argo Tea is a great suggestion and in fact, I've had a business meeting there myself. The 23rd St branch is good as well although not as large. I hate all of their drinks, but I'll happily pay a few bucks for two hours of generally good wifi, lots of plugs, and large well-lighted tables.
