Waiting to sit

Walked into Joe Beef and waited.Perhaps invisible amongst the crowd of people trying to decipher the chalkboard menu(lame).Told a passing staff member we had reservations. She walked away and we waited.I'm not the most patient person when I'm about to spend a couple hundred on a meal.We left. The greeting at La Belle Province is better than at Joe Beef. And there's no one I want to rub elbows with for an entire meal.Foolish seating arrangement.I hated Cava for the same reason and there the tables are at least a foot apart.

"You only have one chance to make a good first impression." I'm certain even Cindy Crawford got turned down for dates.

      2. I agree with you, they seem to have let all the success go to their head (Had a similar unimpressive service evening there myself recently, food was OK). I would leave as well if I was ignored and then expected to spend hundreds of dollars. I do like chalkboard menus in general, means the menu changes frequently! ;)

Yes... clearly we don't know all the details: For how long did you stand, unnoticed at the door? How long did you wait after the staff member walked away? Sometimes I think it's easy to forgot that sometimes we all have slip-ups.

I understand that the bench seating isn't the most ideal seating arrangement for some people, but part of the reason for going to restaurants is to be in the company of others... at least in my opinion. I have a feeling that if you're going to be upset by chalkboard menus and proximity to other diners, then there was really nothing the staff could have done to remedy the situation. The restaurant is clearly pleasing to lots of people in its current configuration, so I'm not sure what they could have done to please you: Paper menus on demand? Remove two of the two-top tables from along the wall? I think that if one isn't willing to "rub elbows" with anyone (though the tables are hardly that close), then the point of Joe Beef is entirely lost. Its unapologetically casual and relaxed and Quebecois/Montrealais/St. Henri. If one is offended by such simple things, then I don't think its the kind of customer the place is looking for anyways.

Not to mention that JB is being grouped along with Rosalie and Globe: I actually miss the point of the second post entirely... Three strikes and who's out? Montreal? David McMillan? I hardly think that the successes of the city should be judged on these places, and I dont think David had a lot of say in much of anything at his previous restaurants... I'm really not understanding the point...

Note: the above post is not to meant to suggest that I'm a die-hard supporter of Joe Beef: I've had one great meal and one mediocre meal there. Liverpool house fared no better. On my one trip to McKieran's I had a decent brunch but maybe the worst dining experience of my life, but this was due largely to a "slumming" Westmount couple who likely descended the hill to mingle with the commoners. The hostess handled the rather difficult situation badly, but it was another case of a customer expecting something from a restaurant that was unreasonable.

You should have stuck with your reservation - I had a great dinner there a few weeks back. No complaints about service whatsoever.

            2. Maybe I'll give another chance one day.

              1. i've had the opposite experience. i've been offered a free drink while i waited and i've seen the same courtesy extended to parties of 4-6 even on a few occasions.
