**CNY Pierogie Alert**

Go to The Welcome Inn in Syracuse if you want pierogies.

Probably shouldn't delay your visit, because the lady in the kitchen there making them, Bernice, is 85 years old.

Otherwise, you're unlikely to find excellent pierogies. Nothing I've found in a restaurant, diner, deli, supermarket or farmers market compares to what is served at The Welcome Inn. Not even in New York City where I live nowadays.

Maybe you can get the good stuff otherwise- if you have a connection to some other blessed old lady who's been making them for 60 or 70 years. My father had a such a connection in our hometown of Auburn, but that particular pierogie lady passed away, so I feel very lucky to have found another authentic source.

I ate at The Welcome Inn for the first time a few weeks ago. Before then, the last time I had pierogies as good as Bernice's was back in the 1970's when my parents brought me to the annual festivals of the Ukrainian church (St. Peter & Paul's) in Auburn. And I've had an eyeball out for the last 20 years.

Check out this review that appeared in the Syracuse Post Standard:

Hopefully Bernice won't retire until she's 100 years old.....

The pierogi at Eva's European Sweet's at 1305 Milton Ave. are pretty good, too.

They also got a good review:
