North African on Polk Street

Writeup of the 3 places on this stretch of Polk in this week's Chronicle: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article...

I've been to Cafe Zitouna, and though I've not been I know that Tajine has ample fans on this board. But has anyone been to Aicha, the relatively new Fez-style place mentioned in the piece? I've passed it numerous times and always think to myself "this seems likely to be chowish," but never see anyone discuss it here so have always assumed it was just inferior to the other two.

(edit: just did a search and found the one mention here of the place by Robert Lauriston last year, who liked it. Any recent reports?

  1. it appears like it's prix-fixe only, and while 4 courses for $21 is a good deal, i think a lot of people want to be able to try it a la carte first, which is why it doesnt' seem too popular

The menu's a la carte. The prix-fixe special is roughly equivalent to getting a free dessert. Main reasons I haven't been back is that I'm never in that neighborhood and parking's tough.

Parking in that area's not bad. Park up on Franklin and walk two blocks downhill. Or come on a Sunday daytime. It's easy to find metered spots up the hill from Van Ness.

      2. Finally made it to Aicha today because Cafe Zitouna is closed for Eid.

We loved it. Delicious bastilla, real mint tea (with tea, not just mint), and veggies in chermoula sauce. It was full most of the time. Inexpensive ($30 for 2 including tax), solid menu, friendly service. I'll be back soon.
