Closures in Culver City

This past Wednesday the Famima just closed. The folks working there said the building owners had jacked up the rent so much that the parent company had decided to close it down. It's interesting since CPK Express on the other side of the building just renovated to a full California Pizza Kitchen. and might have used the Famima space to expand into.

The building which is at the corner of Washington Blvd and Hughes Ave which holds Mezza, Choppe Choppe, and Mrs Garcia's is slated for destruction so the owners can build a new building. I haven't heard when Mezza is closing but Choppe Choppe and Mrs Garcia's should be closed by the end of this week.

  1. Hopefully Mezza will move somewhere else in the area, though Kebab Grill nearby is pretty good, too. The space on the other side of the driveway never could seem to hold its restaurants very long so not much of a loss there. Unfortunately, I suppose this means the demise of the Culver Plaza Theatre as well.

i think kabab grill is fantastic -- safeeha and schwarmas are amazing there -- never tried mezzo tho

    2. Update on Culver Plaza: Though Mrs Garcia's is closing today Choppe Choppe has said they still have 10 months before their lease is terminated and I'm presuming that it may be the same time frame for Mezza. Sorry for the confusion.

Choppe Choppe said they will try to Open a Place in DTLA for their next venture.

      1. I'm really glad to know CPK is expanding. I was just thinking there aren't enough full service California Pizza Kitchens.

Speaking of closures, the Mexican/El Salvadoran place across from the studio where we started going when Guy Fieri turned Gloria's from a nice family run restaurant into a tourist destination with long lines closed down. I never even figured out the name of the place -- we just went there a bunch of times.

        1. The folks at Mezza want to reopen in the same building, but venting may be an issue. The building is supposed to be reconfigured to (I think) be a mixed use building, with residents upstairs. Mezza is not sure at this point if this will affect their ability to properly vent their kitchen. I can't remember where they are planning to reopen in the mean time, but it was out of the area.

Mezza is going to open a new branch in Cerritos, of all places, around December (Their take-out menu already has the new address on it, but it escapes me right now). They also said that they're planning on closing in December when their new place opens.

It's too bad about the Culver Plaza theatre, I guess the landlords figured luxury apartments were more profitable than showing second run movies for $7 bucks a pop. Sigh... it will be missed.

Just drove by this weekend and the whole building is surrounded by chain link. There is a "For Lease" sign up, but I guess it's to line up tenants for rebuilt space. Boo.

Looks like Mezza will be at 11435 South St. Cerritos, CA 90703, taking over "India Grill".

I'm very excited about this. It's damn near impossible to find ME food in the immediate vicinities of 90703.
