Change in Pricing for Amada's Suckling Pig

Philly Ray Oct 27, 2011 07:50 PM

I was looking at Amada's menu online, and I noticed that the pricing on the pig has changed dramatically. It is now priced as 225/half and 450/whole (with no minimum amount of people required). All of the same sides are still included, but that's still quite a change.

At that price, you would need a minimum of 6 people (ordering a half pig) to come close to the previous per person price.

...And to think, we butchered one of my mom's pasture-raised pigs, a 500-pound beastie, for $400 last month. Best pork I've ever had and I'll probably be eating cuts from it for most of the coming year out of my freezer. I think I'll stick with that.

When we went earlier this year there was a minimum party of six, and I think it was $33 pp. 7 of us ate the pig, and we left feeling it was a great value.

Wasn't the old pricing around 20-30 each for a whole pig ? Remember my first time, it was for four, took home a ton and was not too expensive. Garces has been following Chang too closely, perhaps.

When I went a couple of years ago, I think it was $32 per person, but I have seen it creeping up towards $40 per person.

But I also remember that we received a whole pig (albeit a smaller one). I wonder if they have just decided on a "one size fits all" policy and are only preparing a certain sized pig, rather than using different sizes for different groups?

I roasted my own pigs this past summer and found out that a 60-lb butterflied hog cost me the same as a 30 lbs one - around $230.- buying from the same butcher. Roasting them myself was a lot of work. Amada's charges sound reasonable to me.
