Chow App ?

perstefani Oct 27, 2011 10:14 AM

I love Chow, but I wish I could use it on th go - often I will find a recipe on Chow and wish I could have easy access to the ingredient list while at the store. When will there be an App for that?

Maybe they are doing a test drive with the Thanksgiving app

      Hi perstefani,

We're working on our mobile plans for CHOW and Chowhound now. It really helps to hear what people are interested in, so I would encourage anyone who reads this post to pass along their ideas for the type of app they would love to use. Thanks for being a fan of CHOW recipes!

        Yeah, some feedback from Chow.

Definately it would be nice to have an app that accesses the restaurant database easily.

And for whatever lists that are out there, it would be nice to get to that easily.

I am always here to give feedback, though I fear much of it may not be what people want to hear, rworange. Specifically when it relates to restaurants and lists...

Good to know. I hope you will share some of the planned apps in progress.

I was happy to see that Thanksgiving app and your confirmation that Chow is finally able to allocate some attention to mobile.

It is better to hear things we don't want to than nothing, IMO

Engineering made it clear what the priority was for the restaurant database and limited resources. I think people have stopped complaining about the database problems since then since we know it won't be soon.

So I wasn't expecting a restaurant app until after Engineering is able to work on the database issues. I just hope there are some plans in the future for it. Sure I can use the Yelp or Zagat apps in the meantime, but I'm hoping someday to use Chow.

As to lists, Site Talk topics requesting apps in the past have mentioned that they would like an app for those restuarants they flag as wanting to go so when they are out and about they can access that info easily.

I'm not sure what the status of the old lists feature is. I had a lot of holiday info stashed there that would be useful to get to from my smartphone, though I realize if this feature ever works again, that app wouldn't be available this year.

Would like to easily access my Chow lists while on the go and in the vicinity of the places on my geographical lists.

But this may not be possible since my Chow lists can't be read even in the "normal" manner. . . any ETA of a fix?

I would like apps that work on: Ipad, Iphone, IpadTouch, Android tablets and phone. I would prefer that there be limited if no use of flash so that functionality could be consistent across applications. I would like a tie to Google Maps, and if possilbe a link from the chow part to amazon or BN to buy books that are listed. Also, unlike the Yelp app which allows you to search but not put in reviews, I do not want the app to be read only, but would love to be able to enter my reviews/discussions from any device.

I agree - it would be great to have an App that works for any smartphone / tablet.

I'd love to have access to recipes that I've bookmarked/saved. Also access to recommendations of places to go in the area I'm (using GPS) or an area I set based on neighborhood/city/zipcode.

Also - I'd LOVE to see a feature that allows you to build shopping lists from recipes you select. This would be so useful when I'm building a meal or even several meals over the course of a week.

I searched for a chowhound app for my Iphone today and was shocked there isn't one. Are there still plans to have one?

And if not one for Ipod/Itouch/Ipad.. how about one for Android which will soon rule the internet.

What were you expecting in a Chowhound app?

Just an easier way to access the website on my iphone. Maybe some added features using the location finder.

As it says on the log in, the location finder is going away in a few weeks. TPTB determined location is not a feature needed by this site.

I am afraid that chowhound has decided to cede that part of the market to other people. I have used, with some consternation apps from yelp, zagat, and urbanspoon. I generally trust them for providing location, especially if you are specific about your search. I of course have some qualms about the reviews on those sites.
