Steel-Cut Oats: McCann's vs bulk product

I have been paying almost $6 per 28oz can of McCann's oatmeal. The other day I noticed steel cut oats in bulk at a local grocer (Fairway in NYC) for $1.99 per pound. Can anyone imagine that these would be any less good than McCann's? I plan to try when I finish the open can In my house, but for now, curious if anyone thinks there is a difference. Thanks.

I buy bulk steel cut oats at whole foods - never really noticed a difference except to the wallet. :)

I had no idea that WF sold these---I will try the bulk oats from there or Fairway soon.....thanks for all the help!

Want to experiment with the savory oatmeal, too....and the fried oatmeal cakes.

For a savory dish, consider whole oats, groats.

What oat cakes do you have in mind?
        - leftover cooked oats, cut into slices and fried
        - pancakes with oats
        - Scottish oat cakes
The latter ones require a finer grind than cut oats.

      Hi, erica:

Less good? No. I think the bulk is every bit as good as McCann's.

Still, there are differences. I have never found bulk (or even another $$ brand), steelcut oats that have the same size cut or the uniformity of size as McCann's. I think the latter therefore yields a more uniform consistency in the finished porridge. For me this is no great justificaton to spend 3x more. Who'm I needing to impress a 6AM, the cat? My belly and colon don't care.

      Aloha,

I buy steel cut oats in bulk. I like the bulk product every bit as much as McCann's. The oats were virtually identical to my eye, and cook up the same.

          i suggest doing this!!

a lot of stores around me that sell items in bulk sell steel cut oats in bulk. even at whole paycheck theyre cheaper than 6 bucks for 28 oz!

i've never found a difference, certainly not one that justifies the price.

also, look for bob's red mill brand. my local supermarket has the 24 ounce package for $2.99 -- on sale for $2.50.
