Fish Tacos & Tequila

Have a friend coming to town and he's a big fish taco and tequila guy. Where in the Boston area can I take him for good fish tacos and a tequila or margarita that's not too expensive?

Papagayo (near South Station) has both, but just be aware that the fish in the fish tacos is not battered, if that's what he's expecting (I have not tried them). Herrera's on Temple st has a decent fish burrito, but he might have to go across the street to Stoddards to get his tequila.

I was just going to say, the two most commonly cited fish taco favorites, Dorado and El Pelon, don't serve liquor. How are they at La Verdad?

the one time i tried the fish tacos at La Verdad, i was underwhelmed; never went back.

Another option is to get fish tacos ($7) and tequila at Uni sashimi bar (Eliot hotel). The fish tacos at Papagayo are $12 (but I can't comment on portion size relative to Uni).

I had the fish tacos at La Verdad recently, and was underwhelmed. A little "fishy", not nearly as good as El Pelon. Does the new Temazcal have fish tacos? Haven't had their food, but their margarita was pretty good.

I was at La Verdad in Sept., and the fish tacos were fresh and crispy. Nothing else was particularly good. The new Temazcal has fish tacos. I tasted their skirt steak tacos, and they were fabulous. I thought they were a little pricey, and the presentation was a little too precious for me. On a beautiful day, drinking a margarita, it was v. nice.

My dining partner-in-crime, B was underwhelmed by the fish tacos at Papagayo (~ 2-3 months ago) and this guy will eat anything and be happy. They were unbattered, big, white hunks of fish, as barleywino states, and rather pallid, looking sad in their tortillas (I think there was only 1/taco, but I could be wrong and I ain't about to stir up that pot again). We sat at the bar and felt like the bartender, while attentive, was constantly pushing drinks even when our glasses were not drained.

Nice manager, though, who stopped by to ask how things were going.

EDIT: In my post above, I meant to say 1 tortilla/taco serving, not "1/taco."

I have wicked strong thoughts about this. for me, quality fish tacos are all about the type of fish, the batter/frying, and the sauces. handmade tortillas are a big plus.La Verdad has tops on all 3 counts:
**they use haddock, not flavorless tilapia or other
** the batter frying is top notch here
** chipotle and crema sauces are best around
** handmade corn tortillas, made while you watch if you go before 4pm weekdays

El Pelon's are pretty good, but a 6 compared to la Verdad's 10- for me, that is. And lots of tequilas at La Verdad of course.( El Pelon has no bar.)

I've liked the fish tacos in seafood restaurants on the Cape and wonder what the Legal version is like- it's on the menu at the test kitchen in the Seaport. Plus they have a full bar.

I find that there are mediocre fish tacos in a lot of restaurants. But, I love "baja" fish tacos and those are scarce, if all to be found. I've yet to "love" any in this area, except years ago in the chain Baja Fresh, which has closed every location in Ma.
My next City to try exploring is Portsmouth, but that's a different board.
Good luck and let us know if you find a place. :)

I love fish tacos and order them almost every place I go. I think that they are ok at La Verdad, the highlight being the tortillas. I prefer the ones that are actually serverd at the chain Margaritas. You also cannot beat the tequila prices. But if you are looking inthe city, Zocalo is another option.

Thanks for the suggestions. I should have mentioned that I do enjoy the fish tacos at both El Pelon and Dorado. But the lack of tequila served there ruled them out for this trip.

Also should have added the I'm obviously aware that the mexican food in Boston doesn't measure up to that found in Texas, the southwest, California, or Mexico. But my friend is coming to visit in Massachusetts, so those other locations aren't really an option.

Hadn't thought about Zocalo. Good tip. Never had fish tacos there, but I have enjoyed the meals I have had there. I've been underwhelmed by the food at La Verdad.
