Pedones in Hermosa Beach?

  • 7

I used to eat there many years ago when I lived in LA. Wondering if it still exists and if it's any good now. I'm visiting my son this weekend and would love to drive down the beach towns. If not Pedones', then is there any other pizza place that is good? Close to the beach (any beach!) would be great.

Thanks!

  1. Two blocks from the beach in Santa Monica's Ocean Park is Stella Rossa. Very Good Pizza.

Thanks, I should have said--I was thinking the south beach towns. Hermosa, Manhattan, Redondo, even as far south as Newport or Laguna. I really feel like I've got to take a looong drive south, where I haven't spent much time on my last few visits. Somehow I don't think of Santa Monica as a typical beach town, dunno why. Will keep Stella Rossa in mind for next time I'm on the Westside.

I completely agree with you about Santa Monica not having the beach town feel. It's probably for three reasons:

        * The city and beach are at different levels
        * It's more urban than a typical beach town
        * It's one of the worst beachs in LA

I lived in Hermosa Beach for 10+ years. I haven't lived there in about 4 but still make it back regularly. Pedones is still there as far as I know. I haven't eaten there in at least a year but the last time I did, it was no better or worse than it ever was. So if you liked it before, you'd probably still like it. I think most people would say Paisanos which is a few blocks south on the same side on Hermosa Avenue makes a little better pie but if you have a nostalgic preference for Pedone's I wouldn't say you would be wrong to go there instead.

Pedone's is still there and going strong - when I lived in Hermosa, this was the closest spot and there was many a night ended with Pedone's pizza and deep-fried mac and cheese bites (not to be had in the light of day or when sober). Agree that Paisano's is the other one to try in the area.

Thanks--you articulated the reasons about Santa Monica perfectly.

Not sure if nostalgia will win out. As I recall, Hermosa Ave is very walkable, so it may be a toss-up if/when we get there.

            Thanks again!

      2. There's a new Pizzeria Mozza in Newport Beach. Great Pizzas.

Thanks for this, worth noting if we end up there at dinnertime.
