I need a one-upper
The past couple of weeks that my friend and I have gone out, we've been somewhat on the track of one-upping each other. First was Highland Kitchen which I told him would be a place that you've heard of and are either excited to go/again or never have at all. Then he took me to Grotto which was good, but wayyyy different. It's my turn now and I need help. I'm considering the North Shore, but something less ordinary. Maybe East Boston? Help! I'm willing to throw curveballs...and bat against them.

Cafe Polonia in Salem? I've only been to the Dorchester location, but it is completely out of the ordinary, the food is excellent, the vibe is unique and warm.

sob, the Globe recently gave 3 stars to 62 Wharf in Salem. We love it there; quiet.elegant ,comfy room w/ great service and wonderful no. ital food w/ some twists. It's fun to explore salem and marblehead while you're up there. They have recently tweaked their name and are just about to launch a new website, but this should help:

As to east boston, many CHs love Rincon Limeno for something very unique, but it is not a step up in elegance from grotto- if that's what you are seeking.

Can I tattoo Rincon Limeno on my forehead? Man do I like that place. Very different from HK and Grotto, but if you get a ceviche mixto and the fried seafood plate, you will have enough food to make you bust and die happy.

Right on - I forgot we had the ceviche and a perfect lomo saltado the last time we were there.

Closes early (8pm) and it's not one for ambiance, but the Cambodian food at Thmor Da in Revere is very good.

I'd second Rincon Limeno.. Other options, Little Q Hot Pot in Arlington, Il Casale in Belmont, or just take out bahn mi's from Dot Ave..
What sort of vibe do you enjoy? Is this a nice dinner with cocktails and cute members of the opposite gender thing, or are you up for hole in the wall authentic ethnic places?

Agree with Rincon Limeno, I've had a chance to most of their menu, it's all good. Also, Moroccan Hospitality on Salem St. in Malden has some excellent tangine dishes.

I'm pretty open to everything, but I am timid about Moroccan or Indian food (I've had it maybe once or twice). Rincon Limeno seems like a pretty good bet, but I also spent time in Peru so I know what I enjoy eating. I live in South Boston, so I don't want to go too far, but I am willing to drive 30 or so minutes. And yes, I am driving because it is my turn.

Also, I've had some hits and misses with holes-in-the-wall and mid-week desperation calls for a glass of wine.

I'm not sure what it is you are trying to one up, food, value, atmosphere? Is this a romantic relationship? A change up might be heading south to Caffe Bella in Randolph, which is in a strip mall. Sit at the bar, have a few oysters, share a pan of shellfish and share another app or entree and maybe the biscotti icecream or a seasonal cheesecake. It would definately be a change up.

Throwing out some random Cambridge places that might fit the "have heard of it and want to go/go again"/somewhere not in the usual rotation that I always forget about when put in a similar situation -
The Druid in Inman Sq; Technique at Le Cordon Bleu; Green Street Grille, one of the Brizilian spots in E. Cambridge like Muqueca
