Savannah Trip Report
Savannah is just about the prettiest city I've seen in the South. It was great walking downtown, resting in beautiful green squares lined with Live Oaks clad with Spanish Moss. The historical buildings are lovely and the city is livened by all the art students a SCAD. Now onto the food. Thanks to all posters on this site for recommendations. First night, I went to the Planter's tavern (Olde Pink House) for she crab soup and shrimp and grits appetizer. Pricey but both were well prepared. Lunch the next day at Mrs. Wilkes. I have had food as good at meat and three type cafeterias for a fraction of the cost but I agree that foe a lone tourist like me, it has an advantage of being able to try a large diversity of items in a nice sit down atmosphere and meet some folk. My favorite dishes were the fried chicken, dirty rice parsnips, beef stew, and lima beans. I thought less of the peach cobbler and creamed corn. I made made reservations for Alligator Soul for 9PM (too late) the next night, but instead tried chowmining earlier in the day and struck gold. Nancy's Seafood Market (on W Bay) had a low country boil featuring a small crab, about 40 shrimp, summer sausage, corn and potatoes all boiled together and fresh as can be for $7.50! What an extraordinary meal and deal. It was nice talking to locals there as well. Next door, was the Family BBQ shack serving up a $5.00 special of ribs and chicken (3 ribs and 3 drumsticks) and a side of beans that i had to pick up to try. It was also very good. So for the price of half an entree at Alligator Soul (which i;m sure is excellent), I could feed a family of four or rather stuff myself twice over. This made me very chow happy.
