Great new Nepali / Indian restaurant in Somerville: Masala

I've eaten twice now at Masala, the new Nepali and Indian restaurant on Broadway in Teele Square, Somerville. Yum, yum both times. First time was the lunch buffet, second time was a catered event. Everything I've tasted has been off the Indian side of the menu, and is fresh and very flavorful -- not everything isl loaded with creamy sauces. I haven't tried any of the Nepali food yet, but a Nepali friend tells me it's the best he's tried in the area, even better than Katmandu Spice in Arlington. My friend suggests a lamb dish (lamb sapok? or something like that) which he says is amazing, so I'm looking forward to that next time. I find Nepali food to be an intruiguing mix of Indian and Chinese, which makes sense considering where the country is. Masala had lovely service, also, and a gracious room.

Anyway, I'll definitely be back!

Anyone know if this place is related to Masala Art in Needham?

I don't think so, The nice back story is that one of the owners (they're Nepali) of Masala started out as a Dunkin' Donuts lady in Porter Square, opened the Subway restaurant in Union Square, and now has opened this really nice restaurant in Teele Square!

This is one of our favorite new restaurants, along with nearby Istanbulu. We've been twice, once eating off the indian side, once off the nepali. Everything was great, especially:
Mo-mo chicken (nepali dumplings), dal makhani (lentils) & rojesh lamb. Naan is super fresh and tasty.

Okay, I feel stupid: what is the CH database? (And thanks for adding Masala to it, I think.)

We've had a lot of good luck with Masala as well. We've stuck to the Indian side of the menu, vegetarian, but everything has been fantastic. The curries have a ton of flavor. I also LOVE that they deliver to us. I want to say we've had delivery 3 or 4 times now?

Great addition to the Teele Sq/Davis sq area.

Would love to hear some comps - How did people like this place better/different than the places in Ball Square or Guru, for example?

I'll play too. I went there for buffet lunch on Saturday and thought it was very good. Goat curry and a vegetable potato dish on a large flat pan were the highlights for me. They have a bread oven but didn't try the naan. The items are a little fresher than Katmandu Spice and also offer a small chaat bar as part of their appetizer section that includes samosas, pakoras and chicken momos. I don;t see the fascination with Guru and Masala is much better than Guru.

Huh. Apparently my post didn't stick! The short version is this: I like this better than Yak and Yeti, I think, although since that was my first exposure to Nepali food, it might have been inexperience that I was feeling. I like the Indian here better than Dali, which was great when it opened and more recently hasn't been wonderrful. I used to like Namaska, also in Davis, but haven't been there in a long time. So this is better, in my view, than those.

I don't think you meant Dali (Spanish) - did you mean Diva?
