UWS brunch, cafe, etc. For NYC marathon
My Sister is running the marathon this November 6. I would like to have a nice brunch or bakery experience at 12pm then head over to the finish line around 1pm. I expect her to finish about 2pm. I don't know how to figure this out. Any suggestions? I was thinking of Bouchon Bakery at Time Warner but then, maybe is everyone else. I have to see my sister finish....help!

Weighing in just to reinforce what Dyrewolf wrote. I've run this race 3x. Unless you have special tickets to Central Park, you WILL NOT see her finish; you can meet her about 1/2 hour after the race at 72nd and CPW. But it is more important that you skip your brunch plans and see her when she needs you - when she still has miles to go before she sleeps. Grab a bagel and watch her on First and Fifth Ave, though I would counsel that you see her in the 100s, i.e. 110th St on each as it gets VERY crowded in the 90s. This blog post may answer many of your other questions about being a spectator at the race, as well as some questions your sister may have about running it.

You can't count on getting out of the park till 76th, they keep the post race "death march" pretty well fenced in. (I managed to sneak out 1 out of 4 times at 72nd, otherwise I was stuck with the trudge. If she checks a bag, she will have to march to where her truck is, that can be farther up the road.

CC - it actually is easy... find out what wave your sister is in (there are starts at 9:40, 10:10 and 10:40 for different speeds. She'll already know) multiply her pace by 17 miles and figure out when you need to be on 1st Ave. add her pace x 5 miles to find when you need to be on 5th Ave. Maybe get an early brunch before heading to the UES. and then take her for food after. Many marathoners are not looking for a croissant, even from Bouchon Bakery afterwards though.. I eat a burger the size of a sewer cover or lasagna the size of a mason block and beer... lots of beer

Good to know. My sister is from Seattle and this is her first NYC marathon. She expects to end in just under 4 hours. My other sister is from Connecticut but can't get in the city until 12PM so we can't eat any earlier. The sis from CT said she was able to walk into the park at the finish line a couple years ago...but things change. I just need to contact the runner and see where she most wants the support. I will ask her about the sewer cover sized hamburger and libations : ) good to know. Thank you both again.

CC - unless you have finish line tix (which actually suck) you can't get near the finish in the park. I suppose you could see her in CPS (by then she is within a mile) but coming from a 5 time marathoner (this year is #6 if I make it) the best spectating plan is to see her on 1st Ave in the 90's and then 5th Ave in the 90's, (you have 50 minutes between the two sightings to grab something on the UES... prob not Sarabeths but maybe Yura and Co) then cross to the West Side through the 85th St crossover to meet her after the finish. And then take her for a bit of food
On 1st Ave in the 90's she's at about mile 18 so be there and you're "Help on the way" with a banana or gel. On 5th in the 90's she's just climbed a long hill so she's "goin down the road feeling bad" and still 3 miles from the finish... support means even more.
And, decide on spots for you to be i.e. the NW corner of 92nd and 1st and the NE corner of 94th and 5th and she will find you. Not you looking for her. There are a lot of runners... we all look alike...
