What's happening at 971 Ossington (near Hallam)?

eatravel Oct 24, 2011 07:58 AM

I've driven by this spot for the past few weeks, and it looks like someone's done quite a nice renovation on this space. I recently saw a bunch of tables and chairs in the window, so I'm assuming that it's going to be a restaurant. Does anyone know anything more about this space, e.g. what kind of restaurant, when does it open, who is associated with it?

It's right near my house so I asked one of the construction guys. He said that it will be a Portuguese resto but I don't have any details.

As I recall the licence notice in the Star - always a good hint of what's to come in these cases - said it'll be a resto called the Action Lite (sounds dinerish) and it'll be licensed. Quite welcome in the neighbourhood, whatever it is.

Not sure what the rules are, but I think the operators aren't obliged to stick by the listed name. At any rate, I think it'll be open soon; eatravel's right, they'd done a lot of work before the garbage bags went up covering the windows.

The plastic on the windows came down this week - and it looks like they are getting very close to opening. Anybody have an update?

There was some kind of a preview night earlier this week - people being served inside and everything - so it's getting close. I think there's a notice in the window so I'll have to check that out. Wow, I feel like a stalker. Also, my girlfriend suggests the name of the place, contrary to the licence notice, may be Actinolite.

What is in a name!! I think it is called Aconite!
They are waiting for a liquor licence to come through before opening, which they hope will be shortly. They have no web page. They intend to serve locally grown food with menu changing accordingly. They come from somewhere in North Ontario.

I was wrong. Newsrim's girlfriend was right.
The place will be called "Actinolite" after the Northern Ontario settlement from whence the husband-and-wife owners come. (Actinolite is an asbestos like mineral which is a mined at the town).
They are now planning to open in mid-March. The menu will be fairly simple with a selection of approximately 5 starters and 5 mains based on local produce.
If it passes muster, then I will try and organise a Chowhound meet there.

Corey Mintz of the Star weighs in: apparently a former chef at Susur's behind it and it should open in a few weeks:

exciting! it feels like years and years that that building has been in the renovation process, waiting for something to happen. great to have another addition in the area.

It apparently has been years, the chef doing much of the work himself whenever he had time and money to work on it. Most recent delays have been because the chef and his wife have been busy lately as they have been involved behind the scenes in Top Chef Canada 2, some of the reports of soft openings/private dinners etc in the past may in fact have been filming for the show.

It's been at least 4 years, if you look up the address on Google Maps you can see that work was being done outside in 2008!

This place looks good, I'm already reading 5 star reviews elsewhere even though they JUST opened.

I called to make a group reservation for Easter weekend (my birthday!) but unfortunately they are closed that weekend for the holiday :(
