Breakfast goodies for the office between Sherman Oaks and Woodland Hills

  • 9

Our office used to be in Glendale, and we had a weekly Porto's run. Now company relocated to Woodland Hills, and I take 101 from Sherman Oaks to Woodland Hills. I've been looking for a place along that general route that opens by 6:30-7 am and has some tasty morning type foods- muffins, doughnuts, pastries, etc. I drove down Ventura last week, and did not see anything other than Yum Yums and Winchells and various promising bakeries that open at 8 or 9 but I do not know the area well at all.

  1. I think Bea's Bakery in Tarzana (on Clark Street, just east of Reseda) opens at 7 a.m. They have coffee cakes, delcos and plenty of breakfast goodies.

Also, Viktor Benes at the Gelsons at Hayvenhurst or the bakery at the Gelsons on Reseda (across the street from Bea's) are probably both open around 7 am.

I second Bea's but I would check to see if they will have everything you may need early in the morning. Some things may not be ready until later on. BTW They are top notch! They are one block north of Ventura Blvd at Reseda

Thanks for the recommendation! Anything in particular at Bea's, or the usual pastry stuff?

Bea's sells a pastry called a Russian Tea Biscuit. It looks like a giant rugelah (sp?) but is somehow different and, to my taste buds, better. It's a regional thing from where Bea is from (and where I'm from!)

And my husband is not from there - and he still fights me for every bite, so it must not just be hometown memories : )

They also have coconut bars - a hard to find item in this town. Vanilla or chocolate cake, dipped in bittersweet chocolate glaze (thin!) and then rolled in coconut. Think of them as adult dolly madison zingers. In Australia they are called lamingtons. Very very tasty.

Those are the things I've had from there that are pretty unique to Bea's, but everything I've had from there has been good. Not as cheap as portos! But good!

    2. The first place that came to mind was Natas Pastries on Ventura by Fulton, but I think they open at 8AM...

While bulavinaka and I are both sending you against your travel parameters, there is also the Belwood Bakery in Studio City across the street from Jerry's Deli, just a bit east of Coldwater Canyon.
The bakery goods at Peet's in Tarzana are not that bad, and can do in a pinch. Ventura Blvd. just west of Wilbur.

If the Belwood Bakery in Studio City is from the same folks that are in Brentwood, they're a worthy place to consider as well. Only been a couple of times to the Brentwood location on Barrington Court, but I thought they were very good.

      2. Check out Avignon Bakery on Ventura Blvd. in Woodland Hills and see if it hits the "sweet" spot for you and your office mates.
