Kuala Lumpur - Herbal Pork-rib Soup at Sun Fong Bak Kut Teh (新峰肉骨茶)
Hyper-touristy but must-try-at-least-once-in-your-life "bak kut teh" spot in Medam Imbi (off Jalan Imbi) in KL, Sun Fong sees bus-loads of HK & Taiwanese tourists every day, but with a generous sprinkling of KL locals, all here to taste its very herbal version of the pork-rib soup ("bak kut teh").
Like those in Klang (the veritable mecca for "bak kut teh" in Malaysia, if not the world), Sun Fong prepares Hokkien-style "bak kut teh" (as opposed to the peppery Teochew-style "bak kut teh" prevalent in Singapore and Bangkok-Chinatown). But Sun Fong ups the herbal factor quite a few notches, and some diners may even find the soup a bit too strong, especially with the bitterish, lemony "tung kwei" flavor.
The pork-ribs were chewy, with still quite a bit of bite in them. Sun Fong certainly did not believe in the slow-boiling, fall-off-the-bone version. Ditto the slivers of pig's stomach.
The menu has quite a bit of other options if you're not into "bak kut teh" - we ordered a stir-fried lettuce with fermented beancurd, which was nice. Other accompaniments include the ubiquitous "yau cha kwai" (dought fritters) and yam-flavored rice.
Sun Fong's walls were plastered with dozens upon dozens of photgraphs of various HK & Taiwanese media celebrities who'd dined there. Well, my curiousity was satisfied with regards to Sun Fong here. P.S. - Thanks to fellow CH, mikey8811, for showing me this place :-)
To get my "bak kut teh" fix in KL (without having to make the 40km drive to Klang), I'd still go back to the unassuming Big Mouth Bak Kut Teh in Chinatown:
