Boxing Room is fairly new. Moved in to the old Citizen Cake space and making better use of the awesome spot as I enjoy the food way more. Crispy boudin balls, deep fried alligator, etouffee. If your into cajun/creole food they do a wonderful job. The chef was a 2009 Chronicle Rising Star and he's a native of New Orleans. Came from Absinthe.

Also fairly new, there is Nojo. Japanese izakaya/bar bites. I have not been and have heard mixed reviews of the food. Menu reads nicely though. Definitely leans toward the farm/table California vibe.

But, though not new, Suppenkuche is still my #1 spot to eat in the Hayes Valley and one of my favorites in the entire city. Very, very good German comfort food. Loud as hell though if that bothers you. Nothing more satisfying than a plate of Wienerschnitzel with spaetzle and sauerkraut and a side of cranberry sauce. Was there last night and was as good as ever. They also just opened their outdoor biergarten about two blocks away. Sold out of beer at 8:30 as it was their 3rd night and with all of the nice weather we have been having its no surprise.

The three I mentioned all fit within your budget.

Not really a fan of the other places in the area. Absinthe, Sebo, Paxti's, Hayes Valley Grill.

Nojo is really not worth it in my opinion. It's moderately well executed izakaya with the exception of the pork jowl, which is exceptional. As for Suppenkuche, they have a new biergarten that just opened on Octavia as part of the Proxy project. Beautiful atmosphere and great outdoor drinking, especially on these wonderful late October sunny days.
