Where to buy kecap (ketjap) manis in Edmonton?

I've been looking to buy this Indonesian sweet soy sauce for a while now. I've tried the biggest Asian grocers, T&T (west end) and Lucky 97, but can't seem to find it (or maybe I missed it on the shelf?). I've found some recipes like on this website:

but I have no idea how authentic it would turn out.
If anyone has any idea where I could purchase some, or if they have any feedback about making it myself, that would be great. Thanks!

  1. I used to live in Edmonton and i think i might have found it at Superstore in the asian food section. Worth a try, superstore has a decent selection of asian pantry items. Surprised that t&t and lucky don't have it.

Thanks for the tip - I agree, some of the Superstores do have a pretty good Asian selection - I'll take a closer look the next time I'm there.

    2. It should be in the Asian grocery stores. In T&T, I would check the South-East Asian aisle, not over by the other sauces.

Thanks for the tip, but was just at T&T (West Ed) and didn't see it. They have a section of soy sauces (and fish sauce) away from the regular soy sauces, including one that said "sweet soy sauce", but i have no idea if that is the same thing as kecap manis... I guess I'll keep looking!

I'm not sure if there is one in Edmonton, but I have had luck in other cities finding it in Dutch stores (the Dutch like it, dating back to the colonial days)

If that's the case, Ben's Meats on Stony plain carries products from Holland and its former colonies.

Thanks guys. I don't think I've seen it in Superstore but I'll look again the next time I'm there - I suspect they may carry it only in some Superstores. Will check out Ben's Meats next time I'm in that area and will report back!

I saw Kecap Manis at the Superstore on Calgary Trail this week in the Asian section

@shanman99 Thanks for letting me know. Since the Kingsway Superstore opened up, I rarely go to the Calgary Trail one anymore, and they definitely don't carry it at the Kingsway one. Will have to remember to make a special stop there next time - thanks again!
