If you are looking for a fun weekend escape from LA, take the 3hr drive from downtown LA, up the 14 and west on the 178 to the Kern River Valley.

I recommend the Kern Lodge because I like to stay where I can cook at least one meal on the weekend. They have three kitchenettes and the interiors can be viewed on their website. http://www.thekernlodge.com/Rates.html.

I like live music with my food, on a Friday escape, so I recommend the Kern River Brewing Company. http://kernriverbrewing.com/ Their Big Blue Mine Burger incorporates a tasty blend of blue cheese and mushrooms...yum...one of the owners is a former Olympic kayaker...and you can call in and order any food on the menu to go!

Saturday head to the Lakeshore Farmers Market, at the Lakeshore Lodge pavilion, in Wofford Heights, to purchase fresh organic and in-season produce for brunch in your room or boating on the lake. The market is open 9-1 every Saturday except Thanksgiving and Christmas weekend. A YouTube video called "Kern Valley Farmers Market wins USDA Grant" will start you imagining the possibilities. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGuaGgJ4AWo .

For organic coffee and espresso before you take in a fly fishing lesson, go to Natural Health in Kernville and have the owner Cathy make you a shot of espresso with perfect creme (I like it poured over their vanilla icecream).

After a day of fresh air and blue skies McNallys On the Kern is the place for a 40oz porterhouse. It is a short drive north of Kernville and there is a nice walking bridge over the river to burn off some of your meal. http://www.mcnallysonthekern.com/

Sunday morning have breakfast at the Cracked Egg Cafe. You won't go away hungry; skillets and omelets are such good size you might have to split it with someone at your table!

Between all the great food you can windsurf or jet ski on the lake, take the OHV's to the Bird Spring Pass trails, kayak down the Kern River or take a leisurely drive up to the high country of the Sequoia National Forest.

Food, Fresh Air and Fun!
