A good time is where you find it. Cappuccini are like that. In my neighborhood I like Bao Necci on Green St. Real Italian and a very nice swirl on the cappuccino. Mostly open only evenings though. Otherwise for the feel, and history, how can you "beat" Cafe Trieste? Then go around the corner and buy a book.

I gotta admit though, they do have good tap water. For all else, go somewhere else!-----

re: 12172003
I missed your Trieste review, 12172003, but it's right on. I spent a lot of time in the original Trieste in the 70s and 80s, when Iolanda was running things. If I could be transported back to the time when she made the coffee, I would probably still find it pretty bad by today's standards, but at least Iolanda knew how to pull a shot.
It's such a shame that the Trieste has remained stuck in the fifties while so many changes have happened in the coffee world. And now there are multiple Triestes, all taking their cue from the clueless original. But what really depresses me is how people continue to fall for the ambiance and flock to the original and the offshoots in spite of the swill they serve up.
The Berkeley Trieste is a block from my house. It kills me to see them doing two or three times the business of Local 123, which is only a few blocks away and serves coffee that's in a totally different league.
