Anyone ever try this? My wife and I are taking a mini vacation from Ottawa to Montreal next month and we definitely want to hit Joe Beef. Could we do it with our well behaved and well traveled almost two-year old if we get there right at opening? Would likely be a Thursday or Friday. Do they have booster seats? Thanks in advance (I did seach this topic with no definitive answer).

  1. The owners both have kids, so they should be relatively kid-friendly. That being said, I don't ever recall seeing booster seats there - or young kids. It used to be very small, and they really would have had difficulty accommodating a toddler at one time, but now that they've expanded it might be okay. You should be aware that the restaurant is quite loud, and still cramped, space-wise. I would ask when you call to reserve to make sure it's okay to bring a toddler, but I don't think the hour will make much difference there - it's going to be busy regardless of when you go, so if your child is well-behaved, reserve accordingly, and enjoy!

I second that thought...BUT you must make sure they are the kind of kids who will behave because the resto is small. I used to take my kids to 'good restaurants' only when they became of age and not below grade 2. That is when I felt the most comfortable knowing how the evening would go. Even an early dinner.

    2. You'll be fine. I don't know about the booster seat, though. The wait staff and the vibe in the restaurant is chill and ambient noise is not too quiet, so you should be fine. Make sure your child sees the giant buffalo taxidermy in the bathroom -- that should throw him/her for a loop.

I suggest getting the salad with lardons. It's an extraordinary salad, though it does stretch the definition of salad, given the amount of cheese and lardons in it. But it's wonderful through-and-through.

Joe Beef is one of our favorite places in the world...

      1. There are restaurants for children. Joe Beef is not one of them. Just my opinion.

In Montreal and Quebec City, what restaurants would you recommend for diners with children?

        2. Folks, bringing young kids to restaurants is always a contentious issue here on Chowhound, and we understand that there are people who think no one should ever bring a toddler to a nice restaurant and others who think toddlers should be welcome anywhere as long as they aren't actively screaming at the time. That's not an argument that's going to be settled here on Chowhound, and it's off-topic for our regional boards.

If you have specific knowledge of whether Joe Beef welcomes children (for example, you've dined there with your children, you've seen booster seats there, or you've been told they wouldn't be able to accommodate your children, etc), then please go ahead and post. If you're just offering a general opinion on whether kids belong in restaurants like Joe Beef however, please don't.

          1. back when we went there was a table with a new born and a toddler at one of the booths and they seemed to be fine. No booster seats though.
