Italian Dinner with old friend in SF
I have an old friend in town from NJ/NY. Looks like we're going to go for Italian. The three places of interest are: Delfina, Specchios or Vega. Help me decide. Thanks!

Ruth is correct that Bay Area Italian food tends to be more northern Italian and regional, while East Coast Italian generally favors the south. But when in Rome...
I concur with your Delfina suggestion, and would add Palio d'Asti (which we sometimes overlook, but has fine food), and Perbacco. La Ciccia is well regarded, but recently got a good review in the Chron, and is now even harder to get into.
Beyond those thoughts, I'd suggest doing a search on this board; there's been a lot of discussion about Italian places here.

What does "Italian" mean to you and your friend? A lot of "Italian" in SF doesn't resemble "Italian" in NJ.

What aspects of Delfina, Specchios or Vega (neighborhood, cuisine, price, etc.) appeal to your interests? Is your friend originally from NY/NJ or are they currently living there, and hoping for some nostalgic northeastern Italian-American food?
