Elegant with kids.... 8-10 blocks fr/ 59th & 6th Central Park entrance

Hello,

This is my first time posting on Chowhound, although I love reading through the posts here!

A friend of mine and I are planning a trip to Manhattan over Thanksgiving holidays for our families. We will ice skate on Wed., Nov. 23, 2011 at Wollman Rink. Haven’t decided if we’ll lunch then skate, or skate then lunch. Restaurant recommendations/advice will help us make that decision.

Diners include: 6 diners consisting of 4 adults & two 8-year-old boys
Area: Walking distance or cab ride (8-10 blocks would be the max)in any direction from the 59th & 6th Central Park entrance
Price: Each family would like to spend $100-120 (for a total of $200-240 for 4 adults & 2 kids) or less on lunch, including tip (won’t have wine/cocktails with this lunch) Reservations: Ability to make a reservation is a huge plus
Cuisines: Open to almost all cuisines. Italian, Mexican, Peruvian are faves, Indian would be interesting, but really open to any place delish. No “Southern” or BBQ (we are traveling from the south); no Asian (have already picked out a few places for other days); no fast food. No food allergies.
Atmosphere: Feeling we’d like is that of a welcoming, comfortable & elegant (or at least pleasing to the eye) restaurant (not a deli or a diner) where we can sit, relax and eat really tasty food.
Kids: The boys are well-behaved at restaurants; however, we’d feel most comfortable in a place that is accepting of children so that fellow diners do not feel invaded upon by our kiddos.
Our background: Traveling from Coastal Georgia and Central Florida. Adults have been to NYC several times, kids have been 3-4 times. The two families have never traveled to NYC together.
Where we’re staying: Our hotel is on 50th b/t Park & Lexington, friend’s apartment is on W. 79th b/t Columbus & Amsterdam

I would really appreciate any advice/insight from any Chowhounders!
Thank you!

  1. Helpful info. One more ?, though, for fine tuning: Will you be in your skating clothes? makes a difference to what places there will be a comfort level with?

Great question! Yes.... We will be in skating clothes.... Girls in skinny jeans /black pants, guys in cords or dark jeans. Kids in dark jeans/pants. No tshirts under winter coats.

    2. How about Sarabeth's? Kid friendly and nicer than a diner, but not super-nice.

        1. Landmarc in the Time Warner Center sounds like it would fit the bill perfectly.
