Range, Prospect, or elsewhere?

Upcoming (early Nov) trip to SF with only 2 nights for dinner out. Looking for a delicious mid-range place near/in downtown. Party of 4 and we like fresh, local fare. So far I have my eyes set on Prospect or Range. Any other recommendations or reviews on those two options?

It is really tough to go wrong with Range, particularly if you like nice cocktails. Canteen near Union Square is also excellent.

Canteen is another favorite - really homey space, always interesting, inventive & delicious food.

I'm a huge fan of "Canteen" as well.

Really disappointed with a recent meal I had at Prospect - second Canteen but Range is a good second...

Can't go wrong with either canteen or range, I love both if cocktails are important than range might be more suitable but really both are solid. I haven't been to prospect but I think the chef there is stepping down, I don't know when though.

Both are awesome, I especially like the desserts at Range. I would say that Range is more intimate, and perhaps a tiny bit cheaper that Prospect. Prospect is a lovely big modern space, closer to downtown.

I'm a fan of Range. Fresh, local, as you say, prepared with care, excellent flavors, great cocktails, intimate space, elegant yet not stuffy. Don't know Prospect. As to Robert's recs below, I would also very much liked Bar Tartine, though I haven't been since they've changed chefs/menu. I don't know Cotogna.

Does anyone know/like Locanda, right next door to Bar Tartine?

You might look at Bar Tartine and Cotogna.
